Thinking about recombinable and disassemblable design opens up a world where furniture isn't just static pieces, but dynamic, customizable solutions.  Recombinable design lets us mix and match elements to fit our ever-changing needs, turning our living spaces into true reflections of our personalities.  Disassemblable design means products can be easily taken apart and reassembled, promoting repair, recycling, and reducing waste. Both concepts are crucial for a sustainable and renewable future, as they advocate for materials and products that are built to last and adapt, rather than being disposable. Renewal and Reuse: The Crucial Role of Industrial Design in Environmental Sustainability In the field of industrial design, we have both the ability and the responsibility to make a significant contribution to protecting the environment. Through the creation of furniture and other products, we can adopt practices and techniques that minimise ecological impact, promoting sustainability from the conceptual phase right through to production. One of the most effective strategies to achieve this is the renewal and reuse of existing materials and elements. Rather than always turning to the manufacture of entirely new products, we can redesign and refurbish what we already have. This approach not only conserves natural resources but also reduces the need for industrial processes that can be harmful to the environment. Innovation in design doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. Sometimes, true creativity lies in breathing new life into the old, applying new technologies and trends to update and revitalise what already exists. In doing so, we not only contribute to sustainability but also provide more economical and accessible solutions that respect ecological balance. It is crucial that, as designers, we adopt a mindset that prioritises conservation and efficiency over consumption and disposal. Design can contribute positively to many social issues. For example, by designing recyclable products and resource-efficient solutions. But also by designing democratic processes that strengthen our togetherness. The session, led by Erica Anesi, provided profound insights into the importance of sustainable design and its integration with inclusivity. Some of my takeaways: 1. Debunking Myths: • Cost Efficiency: Sustainable products are not necessarily more expensive in the long run. They offer durability and cost savings over time. • Aesthetic Value: Sustainability does not mean sacrificing aesthetics. Thoughtful design can harmonise visual appeal with environmental consciousness. • Inclusivity: Sustainable design includes social and environmental responsibility, making our spaces more accessible and user-friendly. This session underscored how embracing a holistic approach to design benefits the environment and enhances social well-being and cost efficiency. #PolyUDesign_TeachingLearning During the pandemic, public health has been increasingly emphasised, and creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone has become a hot topic.    The "Immu Chaise," supported by Public Design Lab, Co-designer and project PI - Prof. Kin Wai Michael Siu and Designer - Chi Hang Paul Lo, is leather public furniture with antiviral material. It is composited with leather and other materials and has antimicrobial properties that prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms. Besides its antibacterial powers, antiviral leather is also environmentally friendly. The manufacturing process involves sustainable practices and materials, reducing environmental impact and a lower carbon footprint.    We are thrilled to announce that the project has received the prestigious Green Good Design Award 2024.
