Glad to have contributed to this piece highlighting the importance of using GIS and spatial technologies for capturing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data and to monitor land-use changes, forest degradation, and ecosystem health in newly emerging carbon credit markets such as the African Carbon Markets Initiative. It is imperative that the land and resources rights of indigenous and local communities whose livelihoods are dependent on forest resources are recognized, and that they are active participants in the decision-making processes and benefit-sharing mechanisms.
