I’ll never forget that night at The Times-Picayune. There I was, a fresh-faced copy editor, ready to wrap up the national news section. Clock ticking. Deadline looming. Then it hit. The dreaded AP newswire alert. Breaking news story. Late in the evening. 😅 My heart sank. “We can’t possibly fit this in now,” I thought. But my mentor, Tom Jindra, saw it differently. “Dave,” he said, “this is why we’re here. Our readers need to know.” With a calm demeanor, Tom guided me through swapping out a less urgent story for this breaking news. It felt like defusing a bomb, but we did it. That night taught me more than just editing: ➡️ 1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞. The world doesn’t care about your perfect plan. ➡️ 2. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Give your audience what they need, not what’s convenient. ➡️ 3. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞. Panic is the enemy of good work. Years later, running Super Copy Editors, I still hear Tom’s voice when curveballs come our way. We adapt. We prioritize. We deliver. Because in this business, as in life, the only constant is change. 👉 What’s an unexpected lesson that shaped your career? Share your story below! #copyediting #adaptability #careerlessons

2 job postings that epitomize the new opportunity for great editorial talent: Staff Writer @ Angi - https://lnkd.in/g6WA55zG From their Economics & Research Reports to their Home Solutions articles, Angi is the 21st century version of Family Handyman/This Old House/pick your legacy magazine. It's great coverage, with a powerhouse business model tacked on to justify the increased investment. Director of Content @ Black & White Zebra - https://lnkd.in/gZFUgNE4 BWZ's portfolio of work-life brands has taken their respective industries by storm, rethinking what it means to combine agency and newsroom in 2025. This is just one of a ton of roles they've posted in past few months. **** Companies that are combining media with modern business models - "modern" being anything just subscription-blocked content and/or advertising - are making it work, and have the receipts (open jobs) to prove it. Promising to see these roles popping up, many more to come.

This is a really great time to hire journalists. Don't get me wrong — it's a bad time for the news industry. But if your marketing team is looking for fresh ideas, a lot of highly experienced writers and editors have been made redundant this year and are actively looking for new engagements. If your organization has been trying to make a bigger impact through content, consider hiring a journalist. We learn quickly, know how to ask the right questions and love a deadline. Need a recommendation or referral for your particular sector? Message me — I'm happy to make connections and introductions! #contentmarketing #contentstrategy

Calling all #freelancewriters and #editors - this is your invitation to join us for a throwback experiment! ☎️ Whenever you bring up the P word — PHONE — in a conversation with journalists, they tend to cringe. Most of us have been past victims of the inglorious PR cold call, leading us to silence any calls from unrecognized numbers during the work day. Increasingly, we conduct interviews for stories via email. A very rare few (like Melissa Corbin) include phone numbers in their email signatures anymore. It's fair to say that *most* writers would do anything to avoid a phone call with PR, which is precisely the reason we're flipping the script. Next week on Pitchcraft™, we're conducting a live phone experiment in which lifestyle PR + journalists will be paired (based on their focus areas) to get on a call, talk through a series of prompts, have the chance to pitch, then come together as a large group to discuss the findings. In a Fast Company article, Heather Hartnett wrote about the phone call being not only a lost art, but a lost chance at more meaningful, collaborative, and efficient conversations. She cited a UT Austin study that found people feel significantly more connected when using voice-based media. Let's take journalist/PR relationship building out of our inboxes and away from our Zoom cameras for a moment, and rediscover the lost power of a phone call. Is anyone interested? PR spots are reserved for our Pitchcraft members, but I'm inviting any interested journalists (writers, editors, producers, etc.) who are interested in joining us for this experiment on Friday, April 26, to fill out this quick form here: https://lnkd.in/e5Ffd_ig I'll be in touch! ☎️ #mediarelations #artofthephonecall #PRpros #publicrelations

Communication is about more than media relations...
Senior Communications Executive | Communications | Media Relations | Crisis Management | Government Relations
There are 6 PR pros for every 1 reporter! This story or one like it crops up every now and then causing anxiety for those of us in the business of communication and public relations. Add the fear of AI to the mix and it can create sleepless nights for some. But here's the catch...while the media is important, #communication is about more than media relations. When I was the head of public affairs for U.S. Department of Labor, there were 78 people in that office. Only about five regularly interacted with the media. Others were writers, graphic designers, video editors, TV and radio experts, speechwriters, photographers, digital specialists, and the list goes on. One more time for those in the back: Communication is about more than #MediaRelations. #CorporateCommunications #PublicRelations

💡 PR & Publicist Tip: Collaborate Strategically with Freelance Journalists Did you know that many freelance journalists contribute to multiple platforms, offering access to diverse audiences and unique opportunities? Building authentic relationships with them can lead to incredible results—not just for your pitches, but for long-term media strategies. Here’s a thought: ✨ Instead of only pitching to freelance journalists, consider hiring them as contracted media consultants or even in-house contributors for your agency or brand. Why? ✔️ They bring insider knowledge of what editors and audiences want. ✔️ Their network spans across multiple publications and industries. ✔️ They can craft compelling stories and help shape your media narratives. You never know what media magic could happen when you think outside the box and collaborate with the storytellers themselves. Not only could your clients tap into new audiences, but your campaigns could reach new heights. 💼 Exciting news: I’m open to work opportunities with public relations agencies as a freelance brand and entertainment journalist. Let’s create impactful stories together! Feel free to contact me at tammyreesemedia@gmail.com to discuss further. ✨ Happy New Year! Let’s make 2025 a year of connection and innovation. #PublicRelations #MediaRelations #FreelanceJournalism #PRTips #Storytelling #HappyNewYear #JournoRequest
