https://lnkd.in/egxpurDq The Impact of Trauma on Foster Carers “The impact fostering has on carers can often get buried in the misleading fostering narrative. When portrayed in the media, in public and in recruitment marketing as a ‘spare room’ and ‘fun-filled family days’, it completely belies this complex skilled and very demanding role to something it’s not. This is often why no one can understand why foster carers should need any kind of break at all.” Sarah Anderson, Founder FosterWiki Top Tip – Remember the Importance of Self-Care, recognise taking breaks is essential for your well-being. If you are rested and refreshed you will provide better support and care to the child Top Tip: Helping a foster child understand and enjoy a break with another carer, involves explaining to the child that it will be ok and reassuring them that this is a chance to create new memories with other safe caring adults. It’s about helping the child to feel safe and excited about trying new experiences, different activities, meeting new people and even a chance for them to have some time out. #FosterCare #FosterWiki #SelfCare #SecondaryTrauma #BurnOut #MentalHealthAwareness

Have you read this on FosterWiki ‘The Importance of Taking a Break and Switching Off as a Foster Carer’? I wonder how many foster carers actually have a social worker who truly supports them—someone who checks in on their well-being, insists they take those essential breaks, and actively helps make it happen 🤔 👉If we don't address the challenges foster carers face in balancing the demands of fostering with their own self-care, we are setting them up to fail. A burnt out foster carer struggling with secondary stress disorder or compassion fatigue simply cannot meet the needs of their foster children or provide the stable, loving environment these kids desperately need. This not only harms the children but also drives foster carers to resign, worsening the ongoing crisis in foster care retention https://lnkd.in/egxpurDq #FosterCarers #SelfCareMatters #SupportFosterFamilies #CompassionFatigue #FosterCareCrisis #BurnoutPrevention #SocialWorkerSupport #FosterWiki #RetentionInFosterCare #TakeABreak

Taking breaks to recharge is essential to avoid burnout, but it comes with its own challenges, such as potential trust issues and routine disruptions for foster children. 👉 It’s key to effectively communicate how to help a child feel comfortable with a break, emphasising the importance of involving them, providing reassurance, and valuing their feelings. 👉 Top tip: Fostering isn’t just a job; it’s a way of living. 👉Fostering is not just a responsibility, it’s a calling that holds immense significance in the lives of vulnerable children. It is a huge commitment full of happy and equally sad times that you share with the child. To be a foster carer is about giving a child a chance for a brighter future, filled with hope and possibility, and the duration of a child’s stay doesn’t diminish the impact we have on them, whether it’s months or foster carers make a lasting impression and difference to a child’s life and future. 👉However, children deserve to know and understand that foster carers are not replacing their parents but rather offering support and stability, with the hope that they can either return home or find permanence somewhere that embraces and encompasses familiar connections. 👉Part of this narrative is how crucial it is to understand that foster carers never have parental responsibility. We are so often pitched as foster ‘parents’, by providers, the government, marketing departments, recruitment drives and organisations with politically driven agendas, however, the reality is we are fostering families, we are foster carers. So let’s celebrate being a very good version of what we are to these children and stop trying to replace their parents, something that causes untold damage, attachment issues, problems in adolescence and placement breakdowns https://lnkd.in/eRpavyaE Sign up to #fosterWiki #FosterCareAwareness #FosterCare #FosteringFamilies #SupportingChildren

https://lnkd.in/eDHtKhBm ‘How can I work with their parents, won’t it be hard when I know what they’ve done’ 👉 This is a common misconception. ‘Yes, it can be difficult to hear about a child’s experiences, but we don’t demonise their parents for it. Often, parents have faced their own trauma or challenges that have impacted their ability to parent’. Understanding this is key. — FosterWiki https://lnkd.in/eDHtKhBm Over the years, I have heard this many times. These parents face enormous personal struggles, and it’s important for foster carers to understand this for healing and maintaining connections. It takes time and effort, but it can make a big difference in everyone’s lives. https://lnkd.in/eYYfQxex As I listened to the the Education Select Committee online today. A general comment was made, that Kinship is family, unlike foster care. 👉 Quite right, YES a foster carer is not a parent, and this was so refreshing to hear. Because the role of a foster carer is unique, not a foster parent- a foster carer So important to emphasise this distinction. 👉’We should support children to return home to their families whenever possible’ Using the term foster parent is misleading. Please describe our role as working with both children and their families! Perhaps the government and providers, could now please refer to us as Foster carers 🤔 “There is this big myth in caring that all you need is a spare room and a big heart and that somehow to call a carer a skilled professional undermines that or suggests that you don’t care, but nurturing and caring for a child or young person and being a skilled, qualified professionals are not mutually exclusive – ask any paediatric nurse or teacher” , Sarah Anderson, Founder FosterWiki #FosterCare #ProfessionalFosterCarer #FosterWiki #SupportingChildren #TraumaInformed #Reunification #WorkingWithFamilies

https://lnkd.in/eMkTay5q In a recent FosterWiki opinion piece by Niki Kalisperas, FosterWiki Campaigns Manager, the urgent question is raised Is anyone truly listening to the voices of foster carers? This highlights a troubling culture of neglect and indifference surrounding foster care. Despite the efforts of foster carers to speak out, their concerns are often overlooked. It’s vital to recognise the uncertainties and vulnerabilities faced by children in care and the lack of adequate support for their carers. Addressing these systemic issues is crucial to improving the foster care system #FosterWikiOpinionPiece #FosterCareAwareness #FosterCareRefom #FosterFamily #FosterCarer

Being a carer is one of the most beautiful jobs in the world, but also one of the most challenging ones. I 100% agree with you Carolyn Moody MBE. Self-care is key; (1) taking time to recharge our batteries and (2) keeping connected with our loved ones can be so helpful.
