What's the verdict? “As practical and cleverly designed as you’d hope from Volvo. The EX90 is the best electric family SUV available right now” Although we mentioned other rivals above, the EX90 feels quite specifically aimed at Tesla. From the functionality buried in the touchscreen to the laidback-yet-chic design, this is aimed at Model X and Model Y buyers. Yes, despite the price difference to the latter. It’s a much better thought through family car than either of those. The boot is genuinely huge, the car spacious throughout with easy to operate seats and clever touches. We took the EX90 to meet some ‘Soccer Moms’ in the US and the main criticism was the size and number of cupholders. Too small and not enough. Apart from that, it was widely admired. Smooth and silent on the road, it’s a pleasure to drive, more wieldy than you might expect for its size and weight. It’s easy to see out of, undemanding and consumes long journeys with ease and in spectacular comfort. The massage seats are some of the best we’ve ever come across. Irrelevant? ⚡ What's the Range? ⚡ I’ve been on a bit of an EV journey this year, both as a seller and a potential buyer. Along the way, I have experienced little educational moments which seem so clear and obvious and I can’t believe I didn’t realise it before. In a recent post, I broke down my own lifestyle and how an EV could fit into it. I worked out less than 5% of my journeys had been stopping me from even considering changing my mild hybrid Ford Puma to a fully electric alternative. After a 400 mile round trip to head office in the previously mentioned MachE, I had another realisation which is so simple – stop thinking about your range in blocks. Let’s break it down. Again. My most regular longest journey is a 200 miles round trip from Chelmsford to Norwich to visit family. I know that the MachE I’m most used to has a range of 265 miles in “comfortable” conditions leaving me 65 miles. However, if I want to drive around during my visit I can rapidly use up this surplus energy and I’m at 0. Except! My typical visit to Norwich will go a bit like this: Drive the 100 miles to a family member’s on the Friday evening or Saturday morning. Spend a night or two and return on the Sunday.  Assuming I park the car up and don’t move it from 10PM to 8AM, at the least, I have 10 hours of potential charging time. But none of my family have a wallbox so I can’t charge, right? Except, I don’t need a full charge. I have used 100 miles of my 265 mile range which means my battery is at 60%. My family does have an outdoor 3 pin socket which, yes, for a full charge would take too long. But to top up the 40% would only take overnight and I’m good to go again. No stopping needed on the way back. So, going forward, when a customer asks me “What’s the range?”, instead of just spouting off Ford’s estimate, I will ask “What range do you need?” We can then break it down together and explore the feasibility in real life terms. Some updates on: - The need of move and the need of drive a car are part of mobility - The capital flows now make the "car" to be a high value product - But the move towards other type of mobility services (where the volumes are increasing) are making the car to lose market share What can the Car Manufactures do? I identify 2 choices. choice #1: car manufactures lose presence in the market as cars will be seen as a secondary need (going down in the value chain) choice #2: cars position themselves as "car as a service" providing brand value and other things (having to compete in mobility service space) How do you see it?
