Whatcom County residents are continuing to rationally advocate for an end to investment in wasteful, harmful and avoidable incarceration. One essential component of the transition from incarceration will require investing in innovative and effective access to public defense as a priority. We know that incarceration does not prevent crime. Instead, its exorbitantly high cost soaks up money from areas that do prevent crime like investment in healthy and just communities where people have real and equitable access to health care, housing, food, education, opportunity and joy. In our County, voters recently funded a call for transition, and part of this transition must include access to meaningful and timely defense counsel.
This sounds like we need transitional and restorative justice initiatives. Let's start brainstorming better outcomes for our community! Thank you Carrie!
This is so well-stated. Thanks for sharing!
