THE #1 Work Conflict my clients report is... Intergenerational miscommunication. Let's talk about it. This often takes the form of inadvetent comments, standards, or expectations that align with outdated work place cultures, policies, and practices. Did you know that you can consciously or unconsciously pass down intergenerational trauma in the work place? This happens when a negative, toxic, or abusive set of work circumstances or conditions is communicated as the: 'Norm OR a 'Right of Passage' OR Required in order to prove you... 'Have what it takes to make it' AND it's not okay. Reconciling this does not start with shaming and blaming. It starts with... 1) Having the difficult conversations, both 1-on-1 and is groups. 2) Validating everyone's previous experiences. 3) Identifying the source of the negative belief, experience, and naming the trauma attached. 4) Consciously dismantling work systems that support passing on intergenerational trauma. 5) Collaborating on a path forward for everyone that values and acknowledges past negative experiences while building better models for the modern workplace.

Communication can be the beginning and the ending of any conflict. It can be the catalyst to growth or to the detriment thereof when not used in an effective manner. Communication whether verbal or non verbal is at the heart of human connection and disconnection. When we are disconnected from ourselves or others we navigate the world on autopilot . In this consciously unconscious state it is easy to ignore the subtleties of our words and behaviors that cause harm in both our professional and personal lives. Whether in the general community, the workplace or our personal lives we can’t deny the reality that some sort of trauma has impacted most of us at one time or another. We hold the trauma in our bodies long after the event and something as simple as a smell, a phrase, a photo or even a familiar place can cause our muscle memory of that to become triggered. This could show up as agitation, short sitedness in decision making, scarcity mindset, fixed mindset, sabotaging behaviors, people pleasing , withdrawal , anger and more. Have you done the work to create a trauma informed space at work ? Have you done the work to notice your own micro triggers ? Do you know your trauma reenactment cycle or emotional shifts? When was the last time you said NO while dealing in corporate world when you were getting overburdened with deadlines and intense workload? When was the last time you set healthy boundaries in your new year resolutions and decided to cut off everything that came in between those boundaries? When was the last time you ranked your mental peace as your priority and swear to protect it at any cost, even if it came at the cost of losing some people? When was the last time you focused on developing more skills and learning to be more presentable for yourself, than to be involved in the daily-go conversation with office or corporate world? If you’re unable to remember any of this, it’s time for you to take a break, pause and reflect on how to choose your path once again. It’s better to re-reflect, than to suffer in silence and feel overwhelmed and exhausted.
