We are thrilled to share the Call for Papers for the second YARS issue of 2025, YARS volume 18(32): AI and Emerging Technologies: a Path to Sustainability? Navigating Legal and Regulatory Challenges edited by dr Magdalena Porzeżyńska and dr Marek Porzeżyński. If one were to identify the key topics that have dominated the recent scientific debate, AI and sustainability would undoubtedly be among them. While it may seem that almost everything has already been written on these issues, it turns out that they are rarely analyzed in parallel and from an interdisciplinary perspective, particularly from legal and regulatory perspective. However, there is an undeniable synergy between these topics. It is widely acknowledged that new technologies can contribute to achieving ambitious sustainability goals, including the need for a green and just transition toward a low-carbon economy. One area that exemplifies the effective use of emerging technologies in reducing emissions is the automotive industry, especially in the context of the vehicle electrification trend, which is closely linked to the digitalization and electrification of the mobility sector. AI can also support sustainable development, provided that the algorithms used for this purpose are applied transparently, based on a representative range of data, and with due consideration of all potential risks associated with the use of AI. And therein lies the key challenge: if.... See more details in the Call for Papers! DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 30 JUNE 2025

The European Parliament’s Industry, Research, and Energy committee voted on Wednesday to improve access for small businesses and startups to artificial intelligence supercomputers, as well as strengthen environmental standards for such infrastructure. Europe is looking to nurture innovation in AI at home. However, this requires large amounts of computational power. The supply of data centers with supercomputers oriented towards training AI models — dubbed AI factories by EU policymakers — is not only lacking relative to the expected growth of demand but concentrated in the hands of a few companies. https://lnkd.in/eXdPEqaJ

Why are the majority of comments about "NextGen Materials" using data from several years ago? Often from MY OWN research, analysis and calculations, which are now massively out of date. What I wrote in 2018-2021 is meaningless now, but has spread all over the net, harvested by AI. Every new material I know is Fossil-Free. Even the PU-coated alternatives are reformulating. I know of 3 Fossil-Free polyurethane coatings either launched or launching. There are more .. Everyone in the space is open about what they are doing and whom they are working with. So if your reference point is something I wrote in 2021, or you are just commenting without actually doing any research, then please gen up. We are heading into 2025-26. Time to rethink materials, time to do some actual research....

I am proud to work with amazing researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#MIT) on the #climate and #sustainability implications of #GenAI. In this white paper, we explore the key drivers of #GenAI's rapid growth and why #sustainability considerations are lacking – calling for more responsible development of Gen-AI using a comparative benefit-cost evaluation framework. Their new open access paper highlights how the excitement around Gen-AI is leading to an incomplete consideration of #value that ignores the potential #social and #environmental costs. To steer the direction toward responsible #growth, understanding these impacts requires detailed #analysis, coordination, #innovation, and adoption across diverse stakeholders. Looking forward to improving and building upon this work. Read more about this paper by Noman Bashir, Priya Donti, James Cuff, Sydney Sroka, Marija Ilic, Vivienne Sze, Christina Delimitrou, and Elsa Olivetti. Molly Chase, thanks for the news article.
