Recently OB4C member COR Disposal & Recycling was featured in a Breaking Barriers and Environmental Defense Fund case study about their Electric Garbage Truck. COR is headquartered (and serves) one of the most climate-vulnerable areas in Oregon. They took it upon themselves to begin their decarbonization journey (including starting to electrify their fleet) to improve air quality for their employees and the areas they work in and serve. They’re also using their initial EV investments to expand local access to EV infrastructure, helping others’ decarbonization efforts in East Portland and beyond. Under UK regulation, vehicles can only be dismantled at sites classified as an Authorised Treatment Facility, meeting strict environmental standards and monitored by the Environment Agency. This is because vehicles contain oils and substances that need to be properly managed for the environment. Silverlake is the leading Authorised Treatment Facility in Hampshire and is proud to exceed set targets, recovering for re-use or facilitating the onward recycling of approximately 96.7% of all the vehicles it processes. https://lnkd.in/e8w9hF8c

In case anyone missed it – Defra got it over the line !!! The regulations are being laid. Absolute slog to get here since the initial release of the Resources & Waste Strategy back in December 2018 and still lots of really important work to do – anyone want to talk about emissions trading 😊. Many in this space including local authorities and the professional bodies have played an important part in helping to shape the new regulations. You have all had a finger on the tilla of public policy, pushing it in the direction it needs to go for a better resource future – never underestimate the importance of that and never let anyone tell you different. Are the regulations perfect – clearly not – but as Voltaire said “…perfect is the enemy of good…”. What is vitally important now is that we remain focused on rising to the challenge the new regulations present and we continue to work with Defra and other stakeholders on identifying and supporting the inevitable tweaks that will become necessary once the behemoth that is the collection and packaging reforms as well as other forth coming changes (WEEE, Digital Waste Tracking, Controllers & Transport, Textiles regulations, ban on disposable vapes, etc etc) gather pace. Personally, it’s been a privilege working with you on this. I look forward to continuing to champion the issues under the context of the new and exciting ‘resource management reality’ now racing towards us. Very well done everybody !!! https://lnkd.in/eaJ_86aD

Have you seen our new 3-Stream Recycling Station, specifically designed to assist businesses with the upcoming recycling legislation changes in England? From 31st March 2025, new recycling rules affecting how businesses in England are required to separate waste for recycling will come into force. Under the legislation, all businesses with 10 or more full-time employees will need to separate “recycling relevant waste”, including dry recyclables and food waste, from general waste on site, prior to collection. We’re here to help you understand your business’ legal obligations, as well as the benefits to your business of better recycling, and what to look for when choosing your waste management systems.

Wales has achieved a 66% Recycling & Reuse Rate by having an ambitious and progressive Welsh government policies, community engagement and targets, coupled with investment in recycling infrastructure, and a collective commitment to environmental sustainability. It makes sense for Wales to pause and want to review the cost and return on investment by implementing Deposit Return Scheme and associated logistics, as opposed to increasing collection success rates. Newport council sends 70% of its household waste to Recycling & Reuse compared to a UK national average of 41%. So it is time to reconsider DRS across the other three nation and think of using that money to investment in collections. #wasterrcycling #LiveryClimateAction #sustainability
Recyclers call for an end to DRS after Wales goes it alone. The Recycling Association has called on the Government to abandon the deposit return scheme (DRS), after the Welsh Government decided to leave the UK-wide joint scheme and pursue its own system. https://lnkd.in/e278mSXF #wastemanagement
