The priorities are: ▪️transitioning to a net zero future ▪️supporting healthy and thriving communities ▪️elevating Aboriginal knowledge systems ▪️protecting and restoring Australia’s environment ▪️building a secure and resilient nation. So…what about Defence ? Defence isn’t a “national science and research priority” ? All kinds of other fashionable agendas seem to make it onto the list, just not Defence. You think they might get close with “secure and resilient nation” section but that is only about climate change and cyber-security. I fear we will look back on these days in the future and lament that we wasted so much time…

There is no doubt that, as this article from the World Economic Forum point out, 2025 represents a unique opportunity for the #BlueEconomy 🌊 . Particularly, at the Centro Tecnológico Naval y del Mar - CTN we are clear about this, with projects such as #2BBlue, #ThinkInAzul or GREEN MARINE MED we'll participate in this growth. We'll soon present others projects begining this year that will promote innovative solutions and support the companies that develop and implement them 🚀. At the Jesuit European Social Center's #JESC Future Generations Conference, I had the pleasure to participate in a panel on future fit economies, together with #ZOE Institute for Future-Fit Economies and the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies #CIFS, under the chair of Gaël Giraud. With the UN Declaration on Future Generations adopted in Sept 2024 and considering "solidarity between generations" in the EU Treaties, the new Commission for the first time nominated a Commissioner for #IntergenerationalFairness, in charge of strengthening the long perspective in EU policy. Who will live in the future depends on present decisions. Do we bother about future generation, or do we witness a collective moral failure when discounting the future? To reach the Paris agreement of limiting warming to 1.5°C, at current emissions, only 4 years are left before the carbon budget is used up. In such a context, are we willing to forgo purchasing power and benefits today for future generations? What to respond to young people willing to take the train to avoid flying, but the ticket is made prohibitively expensive compared to the plane? Wales quoted the ex. of the consideration of future generations right to be as well off as present ones, in bringing down a motorway project. If it shows that people do care beyond their lives, they distrust policies and institutions. Popular Institutions for Future Generations #IFG are: • expert councils, • parliamentary debates and • lawsuits. Courts ruling the end of the combustion engine or States being condemned for climate inaction (Schweitzer #KlimaSeniorinnen) being some examples. The EU Commission plans to introduce a youth advisory board and generations check of policies and more training in foresight. Litigation, foresight-based policy decisions, proxy representation of future generations in elected bodies and inclusive deliberation are other possible ways forward. #climatelitigation

Great article about the intrinsic link between climate and defence. Climate change makes the world more dangerous, unpredictable, and harder to operate within. This will put immense pressure on defence to adapt and do more. A US Air Force officer once told me that long-term strategic modelling indicated a high probability of near constant conflict past 2035. Climate-induced resource shortages and rising sea levels created continuous cycles of population migration and conflict over resources. I think this is an important aspect for Europe to consider in the current conversation on defence, and something Europe is well placed to lead on. https://lnkd.in/eYxzaQyq

Oceans are home to up to one million species, serve as a primary food source for over three billion people, and drive global commerce, energy, and recreation. Any threat—climate change, pollution, and overfishing—and any opportunity require cooperation among governments. Productive relationships among coastal nations are necessary to protect the ocean ecosystem and the societies that depend on it. Senior Coordinator for Atlantic Cooperation Amb. I’m pleased to share a timely and thought-provoking from the Policy Insights Forum, titled “The Transatlantic Arc: A New Era.” In this recent piece, I outline a transformative vision for transatlantic collaboration, reimagining the North Atlantic not as a divide, but as a bridge. This “Arc” connects the innovation hubs of the UK, the sustainable energy grids of the Nordic countries, the resource-rich expanse of Greenland, and the Americas, extending all the way to the Panama Canal. The concept emphasizes joint efforts to address global challenges such as climate change, resource competition, and geopolitical shifts. By harnessing shared democratic values and fostering innovative partnerships, this vision has the potential to redefine transatlantic and hemispheric relations for the 21st century. From Arctic research outposts to digital trade corridors and sustainable development initiatives across the Americas, the opportunities within this vision are achievable.
