AP Valletta endorses the Council of the European Union’s adoption of the Nature Restoration Law. The new law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and seas, with specific targets including reversing the decline of pollinators and restoring 25,000 kilometres of rivers to free-flowing conditions. The EU policy aligns with the global commitment made by 200 countries to restore and protect a minimum of 30% of endangered ecosystems by 2030. We recognise the relevance of this legislation and adherence to these principles as an urge priority. Since the early years of AP’s practice, we have been aligned with these pursuits and committed to expressing them as best as we can into our design solutions to better highlight and preserve biodiversity. One of our recent key proposals is the ‘Regeneration of Wied is-Sewda Valley’, which envisions the renaturalisation of a neglected valley in the urban area of Qormi, Malta. By restoring its ecosystem and increasing local biodiversity, it serves as a potential tool to promote a social, economic and environmental transformation. This project is the recipient of the Planning Authority’s MASP Award for Urban Planning for 2023.
ACE welcomes European Council’s adoption of #Nature #Restoration Law The Architects' Council of Europe (ACE-CAE) today warmly welcomes the European Council’s adoption of the Nature Restoration Law. This law marks an important milestone in the EU’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and promoting sustainable land and water use. It’s a key element of the #EU #Biodiversity Strategy, which calls for binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. “This law comes at a critical time when urgent action is needed to tackle the global climate and biodiversity emergencies. It’s an essential contribution to achieving the climate targets we have set ourselves and provides important guidelines for the architectural profession. Thanks to these clear guidelines, European architects can provide an effective response to the preservation of habitats, the stabilisation of our ecosystems and support the common objective of making Europe climate neutral by 2050" stated Ruth Schagemann, ACE President On 12 June 2024, the Architects Council of Europe (ACE) and the European Region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA Europe _) sent an open letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, asking them to appeal to the Member States of Belgium, Finland, Austria, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and Poland to vote in favour of the first Europe-wide Nature Restoration Law and to give up their blocking minority - in the interests of ecosystems and in the interests of Europe. The ACE & IFLA Europe letter in support of the law on nature restoration can be found on ACE website. Picture Roundtable. The Philippines has experienced an increase in building projects and urban growth in recent years. As the nation progresses, so does the need for sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in the construction industry. As a result, frameworks for regulations have been established to direct engineers, architects, and building owners toward the construction of environmentally sustainable structures. In this handbook and comprehensive guide, we will explore the key aspects of the National Building Code (NBC) of the Philippines and its complement, the Philippine Green Building Code (PGBC). Repurposing a property can unlock new opportunities; however, in Italy this journey is often accompanied by various legal, regulatory, and practical considerations that must be addressed to ensure a successful transition. In particular, two aspects must always taken into account in this kind of process: (i) zoning and land use regulations, and (ii) environmental considerations.

Building a greener future is possible using Garnica panels. This article explains FSC and PEFC certification. North America understands FSC panels, related to Leed, however I find many don't understand PEFC panels. Great article! #sustainable ##greenbuilding #plywood
Check out our recent article in Western Built Magazine (Matrix Group Publishing Inc.) where President of Garnica’s North American Division, David Smith, explores the implications of Canada’s recent unanimous passage of Bill S-222 This legislation mandates that federal officials thoroughly assess the environmental impact of all building materials before approving their use in government projects, emphasizing the importance of reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainability across the construction industry. The new Hungarian Act C of 2023 introduces significant innovations in construction law. Notably, the principles of civic good taste, architectural quality, minimal necessity, and the prioritization of brownfield sites stand out. These new regulations promote a conscious, environmentally friendly, and culture-oriented approach to construction. EU Green Week 2024 The EU Green Week is an annual opportunity to raise awareness, promote and discuss European environmental policy. Organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment, this high-level event attracts policymakers, leading environmentalists, stakeholders, and interested parties from across Europe and the globe. This year the name probably should have been ‘EU Blue Week’, since water is the main topic of the 2024 edition. But on the other hand, without water there would be no green. The aim is fostering awareness and promoting positive, collaborative solutions. I have the honor to speak at this flagship environmental conference tomorrow. On behalf of the European Region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA Europe _) I will be interviewed and try to explain how landscape architects see water differently. In line with the New European Bauhaus, we make projects that are beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive. Water is an integral part of our projects. Beside two projects in Finland and Austria made by fellow landscape architects, I will also show our ‘own’ project Baakse Beek (Waterschap Rijn & IJssel) as best practice. Today’s session was kicked off by Maroš Šefčovič (Executive Vice President of the European Commission). He set the tone for the discussion while Dr. Florika Fink-Hooijer (Director General for Environment) explained why water has been chosen as the main theme of the conference. I was touched most by the impressive speech of Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine. The ongoing war brings nothing but misery. The Russian enemy does not hesitate to also attack the water supply. Including by blowing up a dam, which caused a huge environmental disaster. No matter how long this war lasts, let us continue to support Ukrainians in thoughts and deeds! My fellow Dutchman Henk Ovink (Executive Director for the Global Commission on the Economics of Water) emphasized that if we can get the water system in order anywhere, it is in Europe. We have the knowledge and money so what is stopping us? Very soon we may vote again who will represent us in Europe. Probably not many people make their decision on the topic of water. But as the main source of life that maybe would not be a bad idea. I'm being interviewed tomorrow by Patrick Child (Deputy Director-General in DG Environment, European Commission) at 10:15 hours. You can watch it via the live stream at: https://lnkd.in/eSAAuvAk. #WaterWiseEU

Valuing Green Infrastructure: a landscape, health and economic perspective Historically, the link between green infrastructure (plants, wetlands, forests, gardens, parks etc) and human health is the foundation of many societies. Contemporary Western societies are returning back to this relationship. Yet, while many disciplines including landscape architecture and the broader built environment, health and economics are independently forming these conclusions there is an opportunity for greater collaboration to maximize the benefits that green infrastructure provides people and place. In early 2023, Standards Australia released SA HB 214:2023 Urban Green Infrastructure - Planning and decision framework to kick start the conversation. Please come and join a discussion at the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne on Tuesday 10 September with key speakers from the landscape, health and economic fields talk about their perspectives on the value of green infrastructure and what a more integrated approach to planning, design, construction and management might include. #AILA #GreenInfrastructure #sustainability #landscapearchitecture #ParksVictoria #DoctorsfortheEnvironment #universityofMelbourne #environmentaleconomics #StandardsAustralia #UniversityofTechnologySydney #Merribek #
