3. WORLD AIDS DAY 2024 “Hope in Waiting: Signs of Hope in the Midst of Struggle" 1 December 2024, World AIDS Day (WAD), is a day of awareness and action in the continued struggle to address the HIV pandemic. We must continue to be sacred activists against a deadly epidemic that in 2023 still infected 1,3 million people worldwide and claimed 630 000 lives. Currently about 39 million people worldwide are living with HIV. UNAIDS estimates that 7,7 million people have HIV, whereas SA’s Department of Health estimates it closer to 8 million people In 2023 there was an estimated 150 000 new HIV infections in South Africa – this means on average 410 people are being infected with HIV every day. #CuidaTuVIHda #HIVAIDSAwareness #Prevention #HIV

As last week’s conference in Munich wraps, here are some of the numbers that caught our attention at #AIDS2024: 1. 86% of children who die from AIDS complications each year are from sub-Saharan Africa according to a recent UNICEF report: https://ow.ly/LQWn50SPocq 2. Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injection of HIV prevention medication, has proved 100% effective in cisgender women according to early trial results released in June this year 3. People living with HIV who live in countries with civil society policies are twice as likely to know their status. This is according to a legal and policy review for 194 countries from 2017 to 2023. https://ow.ly/swLA50SPocs Read all the numbers in our recap blog: https://ow.ly/KLPe50SPoct
