🎉 Exciting News from Chicago Public Schools! 🎉 Chicago, a longtime CASEL partner district just shared fantastic updates: 🌟 Record-high graduation rate of 84%! 💸 Over $2.2 billion in scholarship offers for the Class of 2023! 📚 Students in grades 3-8 are #1 among large urban districts for reading recovery since the pandemic and #3 for combined reading and math recovery. 📖 #Literacy rates for our youngest learners have quadrupled over the last school year! Research shows that students with stronger social and emotional skills are more likely to reach educational milestones (Durlak et al., 2023) and achieve academic outcomes (Cipriano et al., 2023). We're proud to partner with CPS in fostering #SEL and contributing to these remarkable achievements. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gemvQMNy #Education

🔊 In honor of #FathersDay, we're amplifying Macauley O'Connell: a former student parent speaking on the needs of the nearly four million of those in college who are raising children like he did. What supports do these students rely on to maintain their #MentalHealth? How can #HigherEd leaders create more spaces for children on campus and design more accommodating class schedules for those enrolled? What steps come first for those eager to support them? 🍼🍼🍼 Our 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 is building coalitions and strengthening policy efforts to ensure that fathers like Macauley succeed in both pursuits. Because whether witnessing their child's first steps, or taking steps of their own across a graduation stage, #StudentParents deserve access to affordable and high-quality higher education. 🎓 https://lnkd.in/gPibQ5EB

#BrownvBoard (1954) is one of the most consequential cases in the history of our country. It is the heartbeat of our multiracial democracy and integral to the field of public education. On this 70th anniversary, we see the promise of Brown moving further away. It’s incumbent on all of us to think about our responsibility to fulfilling the promise of Brown. At CASEL, we’re thinking about social and learning (SEL) as a key part of a comprehensive strategy on school integration. Schools do not just become spaces of inclusion without intentional policies and practices that create a sense of belonging and caring relationships. SEL and school integration are interconnected, and we must leverage all tools to help fulfill the promise of Brown. It is imperative for a healthy, multiracial democracy. As Justice Thurgood Marshall stated in 1974, “[f]or unless our children begin to learn together, there is little hope that our people will ever learn to live together and understand each other.” It was a deep honor to write this piece as the VP of Policy at CASEL and a former confessional staffer who led on school integration. Please see more here.

I am thrilled to share, below, the three pillars of my candidate statement for the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board. While the two-year seat is uncontested, I believe it is essential to be transparent about my goals and vision for our school district. Therefore, I am eager to present my statement to the community. I have also included, at the bottom of this post, a link to the Coconino County website where you can read my full candidate statement and the candidate statements for individuals running for the three, four-year seats. Local elections significantly influence our daily lives through decisions on education, public safety, and community services, so make sure to be prepared and know who you support! My platform is built on three pillars: educational excellence, community engagement, and equitable achievement. 1. Educational Excellence: Fostering a culture of continuous improvement within our schools that emphasizes the development of critical thinking, creativity, and lifelong learning skills is central. To achieve this, FUSD must focus on supporting professional development for teachers, promoting innovative teaching methods and ensuring our curriculum prepares students for challenges they will face in the future. This, alongside valuing diversity and promoting equity amongst individuals, will prepare FUSD students to be responsible, informed and engaged members of society. 2. Community Engagement: Parents play a crucial role in their children's education, and I am dedicated to fostering open communication and collaboration between schools and families. I will work to strengthen partnerships between schools, families, and local organizations to promote broader and more open discourse which will build a supportive and inclusive environment for all students based in respect and focused on student development. I will prioritize transparency in decision-making and actively seek input from all stakeholders, ensuring that the voices of our community are reflected in the policies we implement. 3. Equitable Achievement: I will aim to foster an inclusive environment that values diversity and provides equal opportunity. With a focus on implementing culturally responsive and relevant teaching practices and providing resources that are tailored to support the diverse needs of students, FUSD can ensure that all students have access to a high-quality education. To do this, I will advocate for responsible budgeting practices that prioritize classroom needs and student outcomes across all schools. By optimizing resource allocation we can provide our students with the best possible educational experiences while maintaining fiscal sustainability. My full candidate statement can be read: https://lnkd.in/gD4NyZeU
