Over dinner with friends last weekend, someone mentioned they don’t hear enough about the amazing innovation happening in our region. It reminded me how many incredible stories—like those of Stoke Space—are out there but often don’t make it into the mainstream media. Working in economic development, I'm lucky to see firsthand the groundbreaking work happening in Kent and beyond. Stoke Space is on a mission to make rockets as reusable as airplanes, and they’re gaining well-deserved recognition. Their CEO, Andy Lapsa, was recently named one of GeekWire’s “Uncommon Thinkers” for his visionary leadership in space exploration. 🚀 Conversations like these motivate me to share more about the innovation taking place in our community. The 21st century never ceases to amaze me. We’re constantly faced with new events that once seemed like science fiction but now demand our immediate attention. One striking (and concerning) example is the issue of space debris falling back to Earth. Not only does it pose environmental risks, but it could also disrupt daily operations on the ground and in the air. This raises an interesting question: will airlines be required to bear the costs of diversions or cancellations caused by such incidents? Or will these events be classified as acts of God, beyond their control? Perhaps, as with many issues, we won’t have a definitive answer until a politician misses their connection or holiday because of it. Until then, this phenomenon presents fascinating challenges for the aviation industry and its insurance frameworks. What do you think? Are we prepared to manage these kinds of things
