Why is Cupolex dome shaped? A dome is an architectural structure that resembles the shape of an inverted bowl or half of a sphere. The arch structure inside each Cupolex dome distributes loads evenly, allowing it to bear weight and resist compression. The stability created by the interlocking arches also allow for versatile use cases including relocatable slabs. Cupolex is the smart concrete void former.

How do Gabion retaining walls compare to Redi-Rock? Compared to Redi-Rock wet cast large retaining wall blocks, gabions offer a mix of tradeoffs🧰. Gabions are assembled on-site, requiring more space and additional labor for installation🦺 but they also offer design and installation flexibility with different sized cages and fill material. Being comprised of rocks and stone provides drainage qualities and an aesthetic only gabions can, however, unsecured fill material🛠️ makes it difficult to trust gabions in some live-load scenarios. Did you know….building with ICF, allows large wall areas to be constructed quickly and efficiently. In fact, a standard ground floor layout of a home can typically be completed in just a couple of days! To construct the walls, the ICF blocks quickly lock into place through a profiled edge and there is no need for a bedding material such as mortar. With ICF you typically need to build in stages (usually to first floor height) before pouring concrete in a central cavity. Are those chunks of sugar crumbling? Today Xsusha Arogunmati, FAIC, APT-RP talks about consolidation. What are the advantages and limitations of consolidation, what kind of life extension can we expect, and what might be misunderstood about consolidation by a novice? XA: Consolidation is when you apply a chemically reactive liquid to the surface of a stone that is experiencing severe surface deterioration—sometimes called “sugaring” where it is crumbling apart—like sugar granules. Depending on the product and the masonry type (i.e. marble or sandstone) the consolidant will cause the surface of the masonry grains to “grow” small spines that then interlock—thereby tying the grains back together. It only penetrates millimeters and is not a way to salvage a stone with severe structural deterioration. Consolidation is something that should not be done without the assistance of an architectural conservator. A conservator can help determine how effective the treatment will be and how it may or not help the situation over the long term. TUBULAR DESIGN OF TALL STRUCTURES The tube is a system where, to resist lateral loads (wind, seismic, impact), a building is designed to act like a hollow cylinder, cantilevered perpendicular to the ground. Fazlur Rahman Khan developed the method while at the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), in their Chicago office. There are several variants of tubular design: framed, trussed or braved, hull and core and bundle. The bundle variant was adopted for The Sears Tower (formerly known as Willis Towers). Instead of one tube, a building consists of several tubes tied together to resist lateral forces. The columns are along the perimeters of the tubes and tied together by spandrel beams.
