Do you know an environmental or community hero? Dover District Council (DDC) is announcing the third year of its popular #environmental #awards scheme. The REACH Awards (Recognising Environmental And Community Heroes) recognise our district’s unsung heroes who work hard to improve the appearance of the Dover District, help to maintain our environment and unite the local community. Split into five different categories, the scheme acknowledges those individuals and groups who work tirelessly to make a difference, as well as local businesses who are putting the environment at the top of their agenda. The awards are free to enter, and candidates can nominate themselves or others in the following categories: • Litter picker of the year (over 18) • Junior litter picker of the year (under 18) • Green Business Award • Community Impact Award • Green School Award For local #businesses, the judges are looking for those who have introduced initiatives to become more sustainable to help the planet. This could be anything from conserving water, using greener products, encouraging greener ways of travelling to work, planting shrubs or trees and recycling more to using alternative energy sources for power. The Community Impact Award will be judged on #community initiatives that successfully draw #residents together to work towards a common goal. This could be an informal group or a more established local charity, working hard to demonstrate that they’re caring for and improving the #environment, and making a difference to the lives of local people. https://lnkd.in/e3UtTi7S #dover #deal #sandwich #localheroes #REACHAwards

Discover the eco-journey of your recycled Christmas tree! 🌲 Here's the breakdown: Volunteers and the help of local horticultural companies chip your tree in green spaces, car parks or sports clubs. Chippings are repurposed: - Crafting paths in parks for vibrant community spaces. - Wood based infill enhances turf to maintain sports grounds and keep your community active. - Providing comfortable bedding for farm or zoo animals. - Creating wildlife habitats in nearby woodlands. - Some trees become renewable biomass fuel, a lower carbon heating option. Alternatively, whole trees: - Protect coastal towns by trapping sediment and preventing erosion. - Educate agricultural students in tree-chipping techniques. #treecycle #ecofriendly #recycling #community #volunteer

🌍 Protecting Nature: Simple Steps for a Sustainable Future 🌿 1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Following the 3 Rs can significantly cut down waste. Did you know that recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees? 🌳 2. Conserve Water: Fixing leaks and using water-saving fixtures can save up to 10,000 gallons of water per year in an average household. 💧 3. Plant Trees : Trees provide over 70% of the world's oxygen and help combat climate change. 🌲 4. Cut Back on Driving: Walking, biking, or using public transport reduces your carbon footprint. 🚶♀️🚴♂️ 5. Support Local Farmers: Eating locally-grown food reduces transportation emissions and supports local economies. 🍎 6. Volunteer for Cleanups: Community cleanups can prevent 80% of ocean plastic pollution. 🗑️ Together, we can make a difference! 🌱 #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #ClimateAction #GreenLiving #ProtectNature #EarthFirst #volunteer #srilanka #europe #volunteering #volunteersrilanka

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) is launching a BIPOC Community Composter Mini-Grant Program to support new or existing local community composters in coastal states in New England. Programs seeking funding must be BIPOC-led or BIPOC-serving, in a Native Nation, or working in a historically excluded neighborhood. They will provide $100,000 in sub-grants to selected projects, awarding up to 10 grants with a minimum grant of $5,000 and a maximum of $20,000. This new opportunity is made possible by 11th Hour Racing’s grant program, funded by The Schmidt Family Foundation. In addition to funding, awardees will receive virtual hot composting training, a travel stipend to attend the 8th National Cultivating Community Composter Forum in Cleveland, Ohio, in October 2024, and access to ILSR’s Community Composter Coalition, a network of community composters that builds connections, spreads lessons learned and inspires new operations. Several New England states have enacted legislation to divert food waste from disposal, mainly targeting large food waste generators. While abundant resources are available to assist supermarkets and other food waste generators in meeting these regulations, there is a notable lack of support for schools, community gardens, and urban farms in historically excluded neighborhoods to establish a local circular economy. This program addresses this disparity by providing limited resources and guidance to fill this gap. They will abide by our Equity Principles Guide to steer our decision-making and help ensure equity, justice, and inclusion support our mini-grant funding decisions.

A Call to Action to Help Our Planet! One Earth One Chance has planted trees in the DFW area over the last few years. We are at 596+ trees and 662 shrubs in city parks, neighborhoods and schools to date! In Spring 2024, we are planting 193 mature trees (30 - 45 gallon) in the following locations March 9, 2024, Saturday - Glendale Park, 1515 E Ledbetter Dr, Dallas, TX 75216 (50 trees) COMPLETED March 28 and 29, 2024, Thursday and Friday - William Anderson Elementary School, 620 N Saint Augustine Rd, Dallas, TX 75217 (94 trees). COMPLETED April 13, 2024, Saturday - Bexar Street, 6911 Bexar St., Dallas, TX 75215 (39 trees) Sign up here https://lnkd.in/g2N_K8vS April 26, 2024, Friday - Cottonwood Park, 301 W Belt Line Rd, Richardson, TX 75080 (10 trees). Come support tree planting, staking and mulching, under the guidance of arborists. Volunteering with us is a fun-filled, dirt-covered, time outside enriching soil and lives. Expect to have a fun time doing the "dirty" work of digging holes, moving trees into holes, staking and mulching. Tools will be provided. What to wear: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes; Weather appropriate clothing that allows for movement; What to bring: Reusable bottle of water; Sun protection, Bug spray The tree canopy within cities has become a growing concern in municipalities worldwide as urbanization has led to land-use conversion and loss of urban forests. The benefits of tree canopy in mitigating the negative effects of air pollution, atmospheric carbon dioxide, storm water runoff, and environmental and social factors such as human health and property values, have led to an increasing desire to stop or reverse the losses in canopy cover. The current average canopy cover in the DFW area is 29% against a target of 37% by 2040, and the statistic is lower in areas of economic inequity. Not only would the lives of any visitors to the parks for the next 100+ years be impacted, so would the lives of residents in adjacent neighborhoods and the children enjoying the playgrounds (500-1,000 lives and more impacted). Additionally, these trees will provide a benefit to the entire community through cooling the air, sequestering carbon, and helping reduce runoff from rainfall. If we act now, tree planting could cut carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by up to 25 percent, to levels last seen almost a century ago. Planting trees is relatively cheap and our tree planting efforts recognize the importance of trees for planet and human health. The cost of 30-45 gallon containerized trees and irrigation is included in the cost of $500 per tree. We are also trying to raise $50,000 in funds for 100 trees in spring 2024.
