How to capitalize when opportunity knocks...
Anyone can strike gold when…
…you pay attention to problems that emerge, especially when others won't tackle them.
As Henry Kaiser said, “Problems are only opportunities in work clothes.”
Curiosity can fuel your ability to both identify and solve problems.
Many years ago, I noticed that a senior leader would urgently leave the office early on certain days of the week...
…Turns out, he was leading community meetings for a multifamily project.
Wanting to understand why these meetings were so crucial, I gathered the courage to ask if I could attend.
It was after hours, but he agreed—as long as my manager confirmed I was on top of my daytime work.
These meetings were intense, lasting for hours as he sought community support for his project’s success. I kept going back.
Soon, I was preparing presentations and fielding questions…
Eventually, I started filling in for the senior leader in his absence, freeing him up to focus on other priorities.
It was a lot of volunteer work, separate from my day job…
BUT, it turned out to be a gold mine for me:
--> Honed public speaking skills
--> Established negotiation skills
--> Helped secure major multifamily deal for the firm
--> Built meaningful relationships with senior leadership
Most importantly, I learned more about myself...my interests, my capacity to learn new skills, and the power of seizing opportunities.
This lesson has paid dividends, over and over again.
Have a curiosity? Pursue it. Problems will certainly emerge, thus...
...Opportunities are everywhere….if you’re willing to put in the work.
