🌱 News in Technical Advances! 🌱 I'm excited to share the publication of my first paper in Physiologia Plantarum, where we report on a protocol for correlative light-electron microscopy (CLEM) utilizing the autofluorescence of chlorophyll (Chl) on ultrathin sections. This method enhances our ability to examine structural organization and Chl distribution within thylakoid membranes across various photosynthetic model organisms, including potential applications in studying photosynthetic mutants. Title: "CLEM, a Universal Tool for Analyzing Structural Organization in Thylakoid Membranes" 🔗 Dive deeper into our research here: https://lnkd.in/dhj4ZFbP Despite the limitations of resolution in light microscopy, which often prevent the assignment of signals to specific subcellular or organellar membrane structures, our simple yet effective protocol enables the precise monitoring of Chl distribution within thylakoid membranes in cyanobacteria, algae, and higher plant single cells. Our findings illustrate the potential to pinpoint areas of high Chl concentration and photochemical activity. It's time for some #MALDI-TOF again!! I'm trying to identify some #environmental #microorganisms using MALDI-TOF biotyper. MALDI-TOF stands for Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time Of Flight. This instrument helps to identify 96 organisms in less than 2 mins 😃😃 👉👉How MALDI TOF Biotyper detects organisms?? In short, when the laser beam is directed onto the sample (thin layer of microbe)-matrix mixture, it causes the sample molecules on its surface to be ionized and it ejects into the gaseous phase. The time the molecules take for each ion to reach the detector is measured and this is unique for each species of #microbe. How's this week going? Congratulations to Corrado Nai, winner of our June Monthly Showcase!   Corrados’s story, Agar and the curse of purity, published in The Microbiologist, explores the challenges faced by biologists using this lab staple and explores the unheard story of the woman behind this revolutionary material.   Agar revolutionised the life sciences in the 1880s by allowing researchers to grow microbes as pure colonies, a method which has remained the same for about 140 years. But purity is a limitation for a growing number of experiments in microbiology. In this long read, Corrado Nai presents the challenges that agar presents to microbiologists, and insight into new historical material he helped resurface about the forgotten woman who introduced agar to the life sciences and medicine, Fanny Angelina Hesse (1850-1934).   Network members said ‘Nai's article is remarkable in showing how limited is our knowledge of biology when it is solely based on experiments in the laboratory. Biology is made of interactions and connections. The symbiotic engagements of certain fungi and bacteria is an example of how little we know about the biological life on this planet. 🔬 ⚗️ A Fun Exploration With Aquatic Lifes and Testing Lab Reagents! I recently had the fascinating experience of viewing a plankton-like creature from a hydrilla aquarium in our biolab under the microscope. Although the images of complete organelles were not clear, observing the intricate internal organs of these planktonic creatures, including their digestive systems and cell membrane, was truly awe-inspiring and deepened my appreciation for the complexity of microscopic life. On another day, I conducted tests on sugars and carbohydrates using Benedict's test to ensure their purity and check their functionality before providing them to students. This involved mixing a small amount of the sugar solutions with Benedict’s reagent and heating it. The results, which show a range of colors from blue to brick red depending on the presence and concentration of reducing sugars, are crucial for checking the expiry and purity of both the reagents and carbs in our lab. Ensuring that our chemicals are fresh and uncontaminated is essential for accurate experimental results. These hands-on experiments not only reinforced the importance of meticulous lab work and quality control but also demonstrated the critical role of scientific research in understanding and exploring the natural world. The ability to analyze these tiny, yet significant, components of ecosystems and our daily lab tools is what drives my passion for biology. 🎉 Award at Jugend forscht! 🎉 We are proud to announce that NUVISAN has been recognized at Jugend forscht for its outstanding project, Black “gold” from mushrooms – melanin extraction from Armillaria mellea . This prestigious recognition is a testament to our unwavering dedication to fostering future talents in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In this project, our Microbiological chemistry department collaborated with young talent to establish a protocol for cultivating fungi in shake flasks. His aim was to find the conditions that produce the highest yield of melanin by varying the ingredients of culture media and to conduct first purification steps of melanin.
