The best line in this article is a subhead: 'AI is a tool, not a threat.' I'm experienced enough to remember when people freaked out about 'spellcheck' in a 'word processing program.' What was spellcheck then but early AI? As I've told people in editing and writing groups who lose it over (for example) Grammarly's (often bad) suggestions: Grammarly is not the boss of you. YOU are the boss of Grammarly. Use that skip button--although you have to know when. https://lnkd.in/djTnPvx9

To understand how AI text has failed to live up to expectations, we must first understand that, despite their name, there’s nothing truly “intelligent” about any of these products. They are what is known in computer science as large language models (LLMs), programs that generate text based on probability. These programs don’t actually create anything in any meaningful sense.

Copyediting AI generated text - what a headache that is. I was reading a post from Dante St James earlier (linked in comments) about copy and pasting AI generated social media posts wholesale and it reminded me of a particular beef with AI text; it's particularly problematic to edit. A typical human's writing may be in vast need of improvement, but will contain their voice. Most of us (myself included) - tend to write far more than we need in the first draft, the editing process involving a slice and dice until the finished piece is expotentially better. But that piece remains human, with a human voice attached. AI while technically always correct grammatically, often has the personality of a Wiki article. This is even more laughable when the prompt has contained, "Be fun and engaging!" usually resulting in a few additional exclamation marks!!!! and no actual personality. But editing that AI output is no easy task. Firstly, that technically correct grammar instantly makes it harder to humanise the wording without completely re-writing it. Secondly - the AI will confidently state information that's blatantly incorrect, requiring you to either be an expert in the topic in order to identify it, or painstakingly fact check any bold statements. And finally - it's far more difficult to add voice to writing that in all regards, is devoid of it. AI has its place in the modern world. As an outlining tool, or solving the 'blank page syndrome' which plagues so many writers, it's next level. But as a replacement for real human writing? Personally, I'd take the sloppy writing and typos over some garbage that likely hasn't even been read by the person prompting it. What are your thoughts on editing AI text? Bonus points if you admit to cheeky copy paste without even a cursorary read of the output 😎 #ai

The Complicated Relationship Between AI and Professional Writing - https://lnkd.in/gV4cKm-3 Despite its current shortcomings, AI has immense potential to transform writing practices. Future iterations of AI writing tools are expected to learn from vast datasets of human writing, enabling them to understand and replicate nuanced stylistic decisions and complex rhetorical strategies more effectively. This learning process will be crucial in overcoming AI writing aids' current limitations.

"These companies promise their AI assistants will boost our productivity, liberating us from the drudgery of writing so that we can use that time to do more important work. Here’s the problem: In many cases, writing is the important work. Writing is hard because the process of getting something onto the page helps us figure out what we think — about a topic, a problem or an idea. If we turn to AI to do the writing, we’re not going to be doing the thinking either. That may not matter if you’re writing an email to set up a meeting, but it will matter if you’re writing a business plan, a policy statement or a court case." https://lnkd.in/dusN5szH
Opinion: AI-assisted writing is close to becoming as standard as spell check. Here's the catch

Justice for the Em Dash (—)! Has AI changed how we write? The ‘em’ dash widely used (and often overused) in AI-generated text, has become a common mark of today’s writing. Many skilled writers have risen to the defence of this punctuation mark, expressing how much they love it. While others feel that certain words, like delve now scream “AI-generated” 🤖 the moment they appear in any text. Here’s my 15 cents on it because I think 2 isn’t enough. Most of us use AI tools to write. But few of us take the extra step to proofread, edit and make the final result sound natural and less robotic. The em dash, — 👈🏽this guy here is a bit of a giveaway. Scroll through a few profiles, (mine included) and you'll spot how the writing styles have shifted over time. AI is slowly infiltrating our writing styles. Not entirely, but it’s definitely making itself known on certain accounts. Don’t get me started on the oversized, justified paragraphs giving the walls of Jericho vibes but in text form. (Those make me dizzy) and I am a culprit, my old posts were walls of Jericho🥴 I agree, AI tools make things faster but, let’s avoid laziness. In a few years time, we might end up complaining that AI has taken over our jobs if we don't actively stay engaged in our own writing process. A quick proofread, whether by a friend or ourselves, goes a long way. Justice for the em dash, let the panctuation mark breath lol! 😂 Anyway, that’s my 15 coins on the matter. Who am I to tell you what to put on your profile, it’s your content, and your choice. But hey, here we are! My little graphic over there is AI generated by the way, not the best but I think it’s cute 😊
