You're ACCA qualified? No thanks, I want a CA(SA). If you've HEARD this, tell me your story. If you've SAID this, I want to hear why. The CA(SA) designation as our most prestigious financial qualification. No argument from me, it's understandable. SAICA is South Africa's own. Backed by our Big4 firms, they have dominated the accounting sector in SA for decades. But SAICA is no longer the only path to becoming a Chartered Accountant in South Africa. We've seen the ACCA designation enter our market through foreign nationals in years past, but now you can do your ACCA articles with a local auditing firm! What is the fundamental difference between the two qualifications? Do you think the market will ever accept ACCA as an equal qualification to the CA(SA)? I welcome informed opinions on this matter as I am no expert. #ACCA #CA #SAICA

Thank you to my LinkedIn community for all your insights, opinions and input! This is just what I love to see - debate, support and conversation to challenge the status quo! If we are not changing, we are not growing!

Personally in the UK I am seeing CA(SA), ACCA and ACA all being treated and recognised equally. The only limitation I currently have is not being able to directly sign off on my appraisees quality hours towards their ACA qualification. UK is getting the picture at least so hopefully SA will soon. I still remember being turned down for many roles in SA solely for not ticking the CA(SA) box that recruiters had.

Thank you Cathy for the post, if any one wants a global CA, ACCA is the way to go, the exams are extremely tough!!..ACCA, CA(SA), CIMA should get fair recognition in SA!

I have had issues with ACCA in the past. Over the last 1.5 years the market seems to be becoming more accepting of the ACCA qualification especially in business. Once you have a certain amount of experience in your chosen field I think it’s starting to become much of a muchness.

As a graduate who holds an ACCA accredited qualification, I am not able to do ACCA Articles as some of the firms require someone who attempted CTA which is the traditional CA(SA) route. This is an indication that it will definetly take time within the Republic.

I am an ACCA holder, but many times have been rejected because a CA (SA) is needed. I have been lucky as I have joined several multinationals who just need a CA

Interesting. For Zambia, the opposite is true though there is a growing appreciation of the local CA qualification, thanks to marketing efforts of ZICA to employers. ACCA has been the most preferred qualification followed by CIMA.

Hi, I completed my ACCA in the UK as it was a sought out qualification. When I returned home I was surprised that nobody understood the effort and cost it took in obtaining this. Hopefully this will change in the future.
