Trust is community glue… A community that trusts you can lead to many opportunities for word-of-mouth. But it’s hard to build, isn’t it? Nope! It just takes a while. Here are 2 ways I use to build trust with communities:

I recall an old talk about building communities. There are communities of fate and communities of faith. The former is like a group of people in the same boat. If one person bores a hole in the boat, all are impacted. They share fate in the outcome and therefore have to work together to better outcomes. The latter is like a group of people who are in the same boat because they seek to travel to the same place. Not only do they ensure no one bores holes, they help each other row the boat. Both look the same. But the community of faith is stronger. I share this in context of how open source organizations view communities. They should be viewed as more than audiences (or prospective customers). To be a community they need to share more than a common vendor. At least they share a common fate, and at best they share a common values.

Sensitive topic, so I won’t dive into specifics: The figure eight. A trusted tie, a lifeline, a twist in a rope you give absolute faith will be there when you can’t hold on any longer. Now imagine that trusted knot - snaps. Hearing the news regarding the recent arrest of a climber in California hits heavy. Climbing is a place of trust, community and caring for one another. Our lives literally depend on one another. Hold your friends accountable and expect them to hold you accountable. Watch out for those around you and strive every day to be the person you wish you had in a time of need. Let a good community win. Let good people win. Together let’s all get home safe. My heart goes out to all those affected. The figure eight, the knot of life. Trust is everything.
