🎄🐾 5 Top tips to keep your pooch safe this Christmas! 🐾🎄 The festive season brings joy and treats, but it also has hidden dangers for our furry friends. Here are our top 5 tips to keep your dog safe, happy, and wagging as we start to prepare for Christmas: 1. Mind the mistletoe and holly 🌿 – Many festive plants, including mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias, are toxic to dogs. Opt for pet-safe decorations to avoid any holiday mishaps. 2. Keep chocolate out of paw’s reach 🍫 – We all love a sweet treat, but chocolate can be very harmful to dogs. Make sure it’s safely stashed away from curious noses. 3. Skip the table scraps 🍗 – While it’s tempting to share, festive foods can upset your pup’s tummy. Stick to dog-friendly treats! 4. Secure the Christmas tree 🎄 – Dogs (especially puppies!) may see the tree as a tempting toy. Secure it to prevent any toppling accidents and avoid low-hanging, breakable ornaments. 5. Create a quiet space 💤 – With extra guests around, it can be overwhelming for some dogs. Give them a cosy, quiet corner where they can retreat and relax.

🎄🐾 The festive season is a time of joy. For our furry friends, it can also be full of hidden dangers. From holiday treats like chocolate and grapes to the onions, corn cobs and garlic (all toxic to dogs) used in your Christmas roast or BBQ, there’s plenty to watch out for. Even unusual items like human medication and shoes can be hazards! Outside the stress this causes us owners, unexpected vet bills can quickly take the sparkle out of the holidays. The average cost of treating what we call "ingestion incidents" can range from $1,064 to over $5,000. In some cases, treating these incidents can run to tens of thousands of dollars. 💡To keep your dog or puppy safe: 1️⃣ Dog-proof Your Home: Secure rubbish bins, store hazardous items out of reach, and use pet gates to keep dogs in safe areas. 2️⃣ Provide Enrichment: Keep your pup or dog entertained with safe toys, puzzles, and activities to reduce boredom-related chewing or swallowing. 3️⃣ Train Key Commands: Teaching “drop it” or “leave it” could prevent accidents and keep your dog safe. Here are a few tips to keep your grilling experience rockin' and safe: 🔥 Keep it Clean: Before you start grilling, give your grill a good cleaning to remove any grease buildup that could cause flare-ups. 🌬️ Ventilation Matters: Grill in a well-ventilated area, away from buildings, trees, and other flammable materials. 👨🚒 Be Prepared: Have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case. Better safe than sorry! 👨👩👧👦 Supervise: Never leave the grill unattended, especially if there are children or pets around. 🥩 Thaw Properly: Make sure your meat is fully thawed before grilling to avoid uneven cooking and potential foodborne illness. 🧤 Protect Your Hands: Use long-handled utensils and oven mitts to prevent burns while handling hot grill surfaces and food. 🍔 Keep it Separate: Avoid cross-contamination by using separate plates and utensils for raw and cooked meats. 🌭 Grill Safely: Keep a close eye on the flames and adjust heat as needed to prevent flare-ups and overcooking. While you're having fun with family and friends this Memorial Day Weekend, remember the following tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday: ⭐ Cookouts are popular this holiday weekend, but the food and drink you serve your guests may be dangerous for pets. A few especially toxic examples include alcohol, raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and avocado. ⭐ Never leave your pets unsupervised around a pool, lake, or ocean. If you take your dog on a boat, we highly recommend having them wear a floatation device and keep them from drinking salt water. Also, try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains potentially dangerous chemicals. ⭐ Be sure that your pet has appropriate ID tags and up-to-date microchip information. People leaving doors open and loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms can all increase your pets’ chances of escaping. ⭐ Be sure your pet has easy access to plenty of water so they don't get dehydrated - preferably in a shady spot, especially if they are spending a lot of time outside. As a reminder, our hospital will be OPEN for the holiday.
