Seeing lots of kids in front of their front doors marking the first day back at school today, let's remember: those kids who are #NotInEducation. We need your support today: ♻️ : Repost this to show society that we need to #ChangeTheWorld ✅ : Like this post to show support for the kids not going to school today ✍️ : Comment with your views on why the we have this #SENDCrisis? The official statistics record 35,000 children/young adults with additional needs not in education in the UK. Beneath the statistics are many more 1000s who have a provision in name only and never attend as it's inadequate for their needs. The system is broken. Let's go slow here. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. Children with additional needs are being pervasively failed on a massive scale through: 👉 Insufficient number of specialist schools 👉 Lack of appropriate support in mainstream schools 👉 Inadequate funding to schools to actually deliver an education that the kid deserves (What have I missed!?) Let's take #TheJoshieMan (who had a year out of school) as a good example, and finally say together, what should be a self-evident truth: ALL KIDS DESERVE A GOOD EDUCATION. Children with additional needs are #DifferentNotLess. ⁉ PS: Today is a good day to tell this particular story, so let me know in the comments your experiences of the SEND system? Free higher education is not enough to achieve equality in society. My new article analysed a 15-year database on Syria, which has provided free HE for all since the 1970s. The analysis unpacked four types of inequalities, namely education type-based inequalities, specialisation-based inequalities, city-based inequalities, and gender-based inequalities. Firstly, from the perspective of immense privilege: I was sent to a private school for a number of years; this despite the smaller class sizes and so on failed to provide sufficiently individualised education to support an autistic individual like me; my 'Behaviours' were seen and treated as 'disruptive' right up until they allowed me to leave(!!!) Subsequently years of working as a teaching assistant within SEN Schools demonstrated that the current system even within such establishments puts an unhealthy (imho) emphasis on conforming to Society Norms!!!! The main issue seems to me to be the overarching insistence that everyone Must be educated, along with the measuring systems for it. Where there are boxes to be ticked, it will necessarily involve putting people in boxes and therefore measuring them against arbitrary standards! Who picks the standards?! I apologise for having no answers as to how to improve things, but experience has shown me how things fail dramatically. IMHO it CANNOT be right to push out more and more individuals unable to cope with society's expectations/needs. INCLUSIVITY MATTERS.....

All children matter, all children should have an education. Huge overhaul of the SEND system is needed urgently. So many of the experts I follow are all saying the same and more importantly parents and carers are crying out for the education system to be inclusive for all. The appointments, reports, telephone calls, research required just for your child to receive the support they need is not acceptable. Putting children through appointment after appointment with various specialists, going over and over their challenges, does have a huge detrimental impact on their mental wellbeing. Urgent action required!! 🚨 Lets talk about, celebrate their talents and strengths! 🙏. #neurodiversityawareness #education #SENDReform #allchildrenmatter #inclusion #inclusiveeducation

I’ve been hiding a huge secret for 255 days; and I feel a great deal of shame and embarrassment about it. Today is the day I come clean! #TheJoshieMan desperately needs your help today! He has been out of school since September last year! 💔 For our family (and most importantly TJM) it has been catastrophic, and this year without education will be one he will never get back. How could this happen? I had to remove him from his old school who were not meeting his needs, and there was simply no other specialist provision available to him locally. However, this is not (and never has been) about TJM. I'm a privileged, middle class, well-educated white male in an affluent area/country. What about others without these privileges? The official statistics record 35,000 children/young adults with additional needs not in education in the UK. Beneath the statistics are many more 1000s who have a provision in name only and never attend as it's inadequate for their needs. The system is broken. Let's go slow here. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. 🌟What would it take to build an early childhood education and care system that truly delivers for ALL of Australia's children? 🌟 Two important contributions to this conversation that have got me thinking this week: 1. Ros Baxter’s open letter to Minister Jason Clare, asking what real ambition looks like for Australia's children and calling for a universal, high-quality system that supports all children, especially those with higher needs. 2. The white paper A Flourishing Childhood, advocating bold reforms to guarantee access for every child, and challenging us to prioritise children's rights and needs.
