One standout feature of this project is the transformation of a 2-level interchange into a cutting-edge 3-level system, prioritizing transit and ETL access at the core. PennDOT’s statewide implementation of Fixed Route Intelligent Transportation Systems (FRITS) is transforming public transportation, and we’re proud that Avail had the opportunity to play a key role in this groundbreaking initiative. This project has revolutionized transit operations for 33 agencies across Pennsylvania, providing tools like real-time passenger information, streamlined reporting, GTFS certification, and more. It’s been especially impactful for rural and smaller agencies, fostering a more connected and efficient transit experience statewide. Highlighting numerous benefits, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) embraced the Design-Build (DB) method over the traditional Design-Bid-Build (DBB) method for highway projects. In addition to trying the DB method, PennDOT explored how the Public-Private Partnership (P3) model impacted the process of completing the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. Yesterday, we had the chance to speak with Mr. Darrell Smith, Director of Statewide Project Development at the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), as part of our efforts to better understand how transportation systems can adapt to the changing needs of commuters. Mr. Smith’s extensive experience in rail and public transit offered valuable perspectives on how MDOT is addressing critical challenges, including accessibility, evolving commuter behaviors, and the need for better real-time communication tools. He highlighted how flexible work schedules and increased demand for late-night transit have reshaped the way riders use public transit, as well as how MDOT is working to improve services to meet these emerging needs. One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the critical role accessibility plays—not only in meeting ADA requirements but also in improving the overall experience for all riders. Mr. Smith’s observations on the evolving needs of commuters and the importance of predictive, rather than reactive, communication resonated strongly with us as we think about how to address challenges in public transit.
