" Caring for our elderly loved ones is a top priority, and protecting them from financial abuse is crucial. Elder financial abuse happens when someone takes advantage of older adults, stealing their money or assets. It's important to stay informed and take steps to prevent this from happening. One way to protect your loved one is by keeping a close eye on their financial accounts. Regularly checking bank statements and credit reports can help you spot any unusual activity early on. It's also a good idea to set up alerts for large withdrawals or unusual spending patterns. Another key step is to educate your loved one about common scams. Teach them to be cautious of phone calls, emails, or letters asking for personal information or money. Remind them to never give out their Social Security number, bank account details, or credit card information to strangers. Technology can be a great help in keeping your loved one safe. There are many tools available that can monitor financial transactions and alert you to suspicious activity. These technologies can provide peace of mind and add an extra layer of security. Lastly, always encourage open communication. Make sure your loved one knows they can come to you with any concerns about their finances. Being supportive and proactive can make a big difference in protecting them from financial abuse. By taking these steps, you can help ensure your loved one's financial safety and well-being. #FinancialAwarenessDay #ElderAbuseAwareness #ElderFinancialProtection #ElderAdvocacyToday is National Financial Awareness Day and the perfect opportunity to highlight the critical issue of financial elder abuse. Many older adults are vulnerable to exploitation, yet financial support for victims is often lacking. Our blog post dives into the challenges faced by victims and the need for more robust financial protections. It's time to raise awareness and advocate for stronger measures to protect our elderly loved ones. But, did you know: The National Elder Mistreatment Study found that 1 in 10, or 10 percent, of elders are mistreated. More than 5 percent suffer financial abuse at the hands of family members. The numbers are even more shocking for those who suffer from dementia: Approximately half of dementia patients are abused. At the very minimum, at least 1 million seniors lose $2.6 billion each year, according to a study by MetLife. And yet, for every case of financial elder abuse that comes to light, experts estimate that from 40 to 100 other cases go unreported. I’m passing along these great tips from Schwab & Co in time for June 15th- Elder Abuse Awareness Day As the child of elderly parents, this topic is forefront for me as my 91 year old mom and 95 year old dad continue to live independently but need to rely on others for some assistance. Elder abuse can take many forms including physical, emotional and financial mistreatment. It’s important for loved ones to stay involved and be aware of how insidious this abuse can become when vulnerable older adults are the target. Here are Schwab’s takeaways to protect the seniors in your life: 1. Stay informed: Be aware of the common signs of financial exploitation, such as sudden changes in accounts, estate planning documents, or unexplained withdrawals or spending. 2. Communicate: Maintain open lines of communication with elderly family members about their financial matters. 3. Report suspicions: If you suspect that an elderly person is being financially exploited, it's crucial to report it. You can contact local adult protective services, law enforcement, and financial institutions where they hold accounts. 4. Talk about money: Talk to your aging parents about money and creating a financial plan to manage their affairs. Here’s how seniors can protect themselves: 1. Keep in touch with loved ones and remain active in your community to reduce isolation and vulnerability. 2. Regularly review your finances: If you have questions, seek assistance from a trusted family member, a financial advisor, or an attorney. 3. Learn about your rights and the resources available to you. This includes understanding how to use legal tools like powers of attorney and wills. 4. Designate a trusted contact to provide another layer of protection to help keep your accounts safe. 5. Consult with professionals when making significant decisions, especially those involving legal, financial, or health matters. 6. Don't give out your Social Security, credit card, or bank account numbers over phone or by email. For more tips from Schwab you can call 800-435-4000.
