September is National Suicide Awareness Month, and today, September 10, is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is a major public health concern around the world. More than 700,000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds (World Health Organization). This year's theme for World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), "Changing the Narrative on Suicide," offers great hope. Suicide affects many of us, and it's clear that change is necessary. Let’s take action by educating ourselves and breaking the stigma that surrounds this issue. We need to embrace this opportunity for change. Let’s support our loved ones by encouraging open expression of their feelings, equipping ourselves with the skills to discuss these topics effectively, and helping them seek the assistance they need. By doing so, we can ensure they don't face this challenge alone and help them find a life worth living.
