Our workshop is well underway at North Star Science School! Newfield Secondary School are doing a fantastic job of deliverying our co-created activity “Crazy Planes”✈️ The students taking part in the workshop design and launch their very own paper planes. Each school is working together to score points by aiming at awesome targets, including cup towers or super hero boards! Planes are being launched with both a kinetic launcher and a battery powered launcher to see which designs fly the best. Afterward, all planes will be collected and taken to a recycling station to help the planet. The team with the highest score wins a prize….. let the competition begin! 🏆🥇 #northstar2024 #stem #stemcareers

🕰️ Can you imagine visiting this monumental 10,000 Year Clock inside a mountain? In the heart of West Texas, a monumental #engineering feat is underway inside the Sierra Diablo Mountain Range. The 10,000 Year #Clock, a project funded by #JeffBezos, is a symbol of long-term thinking … but Ido not really grasp its utility other than a symbol. 💡 Designed to measure time for the next 10 millennia, this clock challenges us to extend our planning horizon beyond the immediate and contemplate our legacy over thousands of years. Encased within a mountain, this clock ticks once a year, with a #cuckoo emerging every #millennium, reminding us of the enduring impact of our actions today. The project’s remote location and the arduous journey required to reach it symbolize the effort and commitment needed to think in terms of deep time. It’s a physical and philosophical journey that invites reflection on how we shape our future. ⚡️As professionals, how often do we think about the long-term impacts of our #decisions? In an age dominated by short-term #metrics, the 10,000 Year Clock serves as a compelling reminder of the importance of #foresight in all that we do. Let's discuss: How can we apply long-term thinking in our fields to create a sustainable and enduring impact? #Innovation #Sustainability #LongTermThinking #Engineering #Billionairemindset

#Spacetech is one of the most challenging #STEMeducation fields because it is incredibly multi-disciplinary and demanding. Think you can't do it hands-on in order to make it accessible to more learners? Launch Canada & InspireTech Canada know otherwise. Hello, LinkedIn friends! At the beginning of 2025, I am happy to share a significant step in my professional career. This week I'll start a new chapter as Process Engineer at AFRY's Brazil Fire Protection team. “Engineered by AFRY shows who we are as a company, it illustrates that our extensive portfolio is our superpower, we can engineer bridges, buildings, energy solutions, circular systems as well as a thriving culture and equal opportunities. We are 19,000 colleagues present in 40 countries globally, and we intend to grow even further to increase our positive impact on society.” Joining AFRY is a professional goal achieved. I had the opportunity to know the company a few years ago, when it was operating as Pöyry in Brazil. Over the years, I followed its progress through LinkedIn, and today I am proud to be part of it: “We are AFRY – Making Future!” I share the company's values and its strong commitment to sustainability. AFRY acts responsibly in different areas, prioritizing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts. In the context of fire protection, environmental impacts are significant. Fires represents a considerable portion of global carbon emissions. While forest fires are the main contributors, fires in large cities and industrial facilities cannot be ignored. Detect and fight fires at the right time is crucial to prevent them and mitigate their effects. Another critical aspect is the optimization of water resources. Poorly designed fire protection systems can lead to excessive water consumption, either due to slow response times or the incorrect selection of water density or flow for specific applications. Globally, fire protection professionals are constantly booking for better solutions to ensure the efficient use of water in our field. From a social perspective, our work contributes to a safer and more functional society. We ensure that people can work in large industrial facilities without interruptions and return home safely at the end of the day. From a governance standpoint, well-founded decisions are essential to protect public and private assets. Preventing fires guarantees operational continuity and safeguards people and material assets. For all these reasons, we must value companies like AFRY, which demonstrate a strong commitment to the planet, the environment, and society as a whole. “We have a unique mix of competences and we are all passionate within our field. Sharing our expertise and insights to make a difference, we are driven by our curiosity to grow and learn more.”
Is today the day, - when you start making some changes? Anything is possible when we engineer change into everything we do. Regardless of business area, level of talent or field, we work to change the world for the better. That’s how we accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society, for generations to come. You can learn even more about the CityLearn Challenge 2023 in our new blog post: https://lnkd.in/dhYRRWcn
We are excited to present the third project of our 2023 Innovation Grantee cohort: The CityLearn Challenge 2023 Lead Institution: The University of Texas at Austin Team Members: Zoltan Nagy, Javad Mohammadi (UT Austin) This project develops a representative model of neighborhoods, and executes a novel edition of the CityLearn Challenge (an OpenAI Gym Environment for the implementation of advanced control agents for demand response and reduction of carbon emissions in the neighborhood level). The model aims to reduce energy use and/or shift operations to low emissions electricity. Reducing energy consumption and emissions from buildings is crucial, given that buildings contribute to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Change AI Innovation Grants Program 2023 is supported by Quadrature Climate Foundation, Google DeepMind, Global Methane Hub, and the Canada Hub of Future Earth.
