As we mark International Child Protection Week, we've been reflecting on the importance of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are not just words on paper—they are a commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of every child. As sector workers, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child informs our practice and support of First Nations families, refugees, and other humanitarian entrants. And these rights should remain front and centre when we discuss issues such as the age of criminal responsibility. By embedding the principles of the UNCRC into our work, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive system in which every child in every community gets a fair go. 📌On the 3rd and 4th of December, HIAS Greece had the honor of attending Greece's Periodic Review Procedure by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). This was a significant opportunity to highlight key concerns and advocate for justice and equality 🔍Topics raised during the review included: 🔹The discriminatory barriers affecting asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in accessing health care and social security. The ongoing challenges in accessing justice, leaving many without a fair chance to defend their rights. 🔹Pushbacks at borders and the lack of effective investigations into these grave human rights violations. 🔹The ineffective implementation of protection for victims of hate crimes, leaving many without adequate support. 🔹The alarming criminalization of human rights defenders undermining the essential work of those advocating for vulnerable communities. At HIAS Greece, we stand committed to ensuring the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and marginalized communities are respected and upheld. We hope this review paves the way for positive change and greater accountability. 📢 Let’s continue to stand together for equality, justice, and human dignity!

Focused Session on Transitional Justice Held by the Abductees’ Mothers Association The Abductees’ Mothers Association, a member of the Justice for Yemen Pact, held a focused session on transitional justice with the participation of human rights activists and journalists. Conducted virtually via Zoom, the session highlighted the role of transitional justice in promoting accountability and establishing the principles of justice. Discussions centered on adapting transitional justice principles to Yemen’s unique context, drawing insights from international experiences. Participants also emphasized the importance of the National Dialogue Conference document as a foundational reference for developing mechanisms, while addressing post-2014 developments. The session underscored the need for inclusive mechanisms to ensure justice for victims, women, marginalized communities, and displaced individuals. It also called for holding perpetrators accountable for crimes and violations. This session was part of the association’s activities under the “Supporting Peace in Yemen through Accountability, Reconciliation, and Knowledge Exchange” (SPARK) project. #Spark #Transitional_Justice #Justice4Yemen #MySonFreedomFirst https://lnkd.in/gPrfsaKC

🌍 Reaffirming Our Commitment to Human Dignity in International Treaties From the Knowmad Institut, together with C4 Recovery Foundation and the Missionary Priesthood Society of Apostolic Life, we deeply appreciate the efforts to reach a consensus on the new international treaty. However, we would like to highlight some key concerns: Child Protection Rights of Migrant and Displaced Populations Freedom of Expression Right to Privacy We insist that human dignity must be the central pillar of this treaty. We propose including Interpol’s "Luxembourg Guidelines" in Article 14, which would strengthen the text and address concerns about extremism and serious crimes. It is vital to establish coordinated mechanisms for victim support and rehabilitation, and to promote international cooperation in preventing online child sexual abuse. Our Call: Ensure an inclusive and protective treaty for the most vulnerable. Promote justice, freedom of expression, and equity for all. #HumanRights #DignityFirst #InternationalCooperation #ChildProtection #PrivacyRights #FreedomOfExpression #JusticeForAll #KnowmadInstitut

📢 Welcoming Mr. Fletcher to His New Role as UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs On behalf of The Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action and the Global Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR), we warmly congratulate Tom Fletcher on assuming leadership at a pivotal time for the humanitarian movement. Children suffer first and most in crises, making every humanitarian crisis a child protection crisis. As such, we’ve shared key recommendations to ensure child protection is placed at the centre of humanitarian action. Our Recommendations Include: ✅ Making child protection a strategic priority in global advocacy and resource mobilisation. ✅ Ensuring IASC Principals and Humanitarian Coordinators prioritise child protection in policy decisions and throughout the humanitarian cycle. ✅ Upholding accountability to children through a child rights-based approach. We invite you to read our full letter, where we outline a vision for a humanitarian system that is united and mobilised to protect children and support their broader wellbeing. Protecting children is critical for survival, hope, and resilience, breaking cycles of violence and laying the foundation for peaceful societies. 📄 Read the full letter here: https://lnkd.in/gjG2BUKi We are looking forward to our work together moving ahead. #HumanitarianAction #ChildProtection #Leadership
