Draghi's Blueprint for EU Competitiveness: €800 Billion, Green Innovation, and a Strategic Trade Vision The Draghi Report outlines a comprehensive strategy to boost the EU's competitiveness, calling for €800 billion in additional annual investment, aligning decarbonization with industrial strategy, and a careful approach to PFAS regulation. Draghi emphasizes the need for a more assertive use of trade as a geopolitical tool and stronger policies on AI and digital sovereignty. Draghi's recommendations are a balanced mix of innovation and caution: • High-risk, high-reward innovations: A push for increased investment in breakthrough technologies that will shape the future of European industries. • PFAS regulation: Advocating for a nuanced approach that safeguards both our environmental commitments and the vitality of key industries. • AI and Digital Sovereignty: Accelerating AI adoption to meet the EU’s 2030 targets, while ensuring Europe maintains control over critical digital infrastructures. • Critical raw materials: Strategic initiatives to secure the resources essential for the next generation of technologies, reinforcing Europe's industrial resilience The report also highlights the need for Europe to leverage trade as a more assertive geopolitical tool, positioning the EU as a global leader in both economic and technological spheres. An interesting read: Dialogue, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is a conversation aimed at resolution, emphasizing movement towards an end. The recent World Trade Organisation's Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi exemplifies this dynamic process. While core issues like WTO dispute mechanisms and reducing subsidies remained unresolved, the gathering served as a vital platform for diverse countries to manage global change and foster future consensus. Despite criticisms of the WTO's cumbersome processes and limited enforcement powers, progress was made, including an extension of the e-commerce moratorium and accelerated discussions on dispute settlement reforms. Amidst global economic disruptions and increasing regional trade deals, the importance of effective international organizations like the WTO grows. Abu Dhabi's hosting of the conference highlights the UAE's commitment to consensus-building and dialogue, akin to its successful hosting of the Cop28 climate summit. While some may focus on unfinished agenda items, such encounters foster valuable progress, as emphasized by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Building on the momentum from Abu Dhabi, WTO members must refocus on reaching consensus in 2026, underscoring the essence of dialogue.

Thanks Noga Feige and AHK Greater China for publishing my and Hendrik Schuldt's explainer article on the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in the latest magazine on #sustainability and #esg in #China. While the submission of the Q1/Q2 2024 #CBAM reports is still possible with default values for embedded emissions, from Q3 2024 real emission values need to be reported. What does #CBAM means for both EU importers and Chinese producers? - From Q3 2024, reporting obligation will be more complex and an automated solution is recommended. - Emission accounting for CBAM is highly relevant for non-EU-producers of #iron, #steel, #aluminium, #hydrogen, #fertilisers to be able to provide data in the coming months. - Understanding CBAM cost exposure snd building organisational strategy around CBAM necessary to navigate this complex regulation Reach out to carboneer for further discussions on #CBAM and its implications!

In my latest article "International trade as an instrument for decarbonization: Exploring the EU-Gulf relations," I argue that international trade is critical for industrial decarbonization in that, through free trade, there can be open borders for access to cheap and good-quality green goods, which, in turn, can help decarbonize the economy and generate wealth. Ways in which the link between trade and sustainability can be designed include energy transition partnerships, capacity building, technology transfer, and access to green-product markets, among others. This article brings forward the potential of a trade and sustainability partnership between two regions: the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Available: https://lnkd.in/dueDhbFs
