Navigating the Medical and Mental Health Systems: A Personal Perspective As someone who has worked in the social services field for over 25 years, I’ve always understood the challenges my clients face when trying to coordinate care across mental health, substance use, and medical needs. Navigating these systems has always been a complex process, filled with barriers. This year, I’ve gained a much deeper, more personal understanding of these challenges. After undergoing a couple of medical procedures, I’ve experienced firsthand how segmented our healthcare system can be. Just today, I had to schedule three separate appointments for something that one provider could have coordinated and communicated to the others. On top of that, as we seek support for my daughter’s mental health and behavioral needs, I’ve realized how difficult it can be to find the right therapists and medical providers—even with every possible resource at our fingertips. It’s disheartening to see how hard it is to get access to the integrated care necessary for fostering good mental health and well-being. As a community, we need to do better. We must advocate for real change and focus on improving our systems, rather than continuing to invest in a structure that is already broken. #NavigatingHealthcare #HealthcareChallenges #IntegratedCare #BarriersToCare #SystemicChange #CareCoordination

I occasionally receive messages like these, but they don't bother me. I understand that some people may not have access to support groups or may have limited comprehension. I chose to share my story on my platforms because it's presented in a simplified way, from the perspective of a patient dealing with chronic illnesses and the mental health struggles that come from chronic pain and medical gaslighting. If it helps even one person, that’s enough for me. Storytelling is a powerful way to improve health literacy, empower others, and raise awareness and advocacy. #ChronicIllness #InvisibleIllness #Endometriosis #Lupus #HealthLiteracy #MentalIllnessAwarenessWeek #MentalHealtgAwareness #HealthJournalists #Doctors

Exploring Public Health and Mental Health Connections In this presentation, I delve into an often-overlooked topic: Sensory-Processing Sensitivity (SPS) in Highly Sensitive Persons (HSPs) and its implications for public health. With 15–31% of the global population identified as HSPs, this characteristic affects how individuals perceive, process, and react to their environments—shaping their mental and physical well-being. Key Highlights: ✅ The biological and psychological traits of HSPs. ✅ How SPS impacts quality of life and public health metrics like DALYs. ✅ Public health opportunities to promote inclusivity and tailored interventions. My goal is to spark a conversation on how we can better support diverse sensitivities in healthcare, workplaces, and communities. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this intersection between public health and mental health! #PublicHealth #MentalHealth #SensoryProcessingSensitivity #HighlySensitivePersons

In clinical work, nothing feels more disheartening than knowing that children and families often have to wait months to access mental health care that local, affordable, and age-appropriate. Many of our rural communities face severe shortages of specialized mental health providers, with some areas having no child psychiatrists or therapists within hours of travel. Many are doing critical work to support a multi-faceted approach to address this issue. ⏰ Prevention initiatives 👶 Early intervention programs 💡 Innovative service delivery models 📑 Workforce Development This is a complex challenge requiring sustained commitment, but one thing is definite: youth and families deserve access to quality care. The future of our communities depends on it. What initiatives have you seen making a difference in rural mental health access? My needs assessment exploring how Telehealth and virtual care could help to address this gap remains open! Big news for the mental healthcare front! 👁️⚕️ The new labour government has pledged to recruit an impressive 8,500 new mental health professionals. This could significantly enhance support for those in need and inject much-needed stability into the sector. Potentially a monumental boost for the existing mental health work force who've grappled with inconsistent engagement and the need for more robust support. Newton Healthcare is poised and prepared to support and engage with all key decision makers to make this happen.
