In an investment setting, an investor sets his required rate of return as the base return he requires from an investment. However, given the usual uncertainty in the market, it is difficult to meet that required rate of return exactly. As such, an investor would set his return above his required rate of return to diminish the risk that his required rate of return will not be met. The excess return above the investor's required rate of return is known as the risk premium.

Private market regulations have been top of mind in the investment industry as of late. In a new report entitled Private Markets: Governance Issues Rise to the Fore, we surveyed CFA members globally to discern perceptions of private market governance in recent years. As it stands, 51% of respondents believe that private market problems aren’t significant, while 24% believe there are substantial problems and even market failures. On top of that, only 17% believe private markets function well. This report explores varying investor perceptions of private market regulations and provides recommendations for both investors and policy makers to move forward effectively.
