The European Commission has released a strategy to increase industrial carbon capture, storage, and utilization capacity across the EU by setting ambitious targets to reduce net GHG by 90% by 2040 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This strategy focuses on the development of technologies for capturing and storing CO2, as well as creating the necessary regulatory and investment framework to support these efforts. The Commission's strategy also highlights the need to establish infrastructure for CO2 transport to support the three main technological pathways of industrial carbon management: capture for storage, capture for utilization as a substitute for fossil-based carbon, and removal of biogenic or atmospheric CO2 for permanent storage. Additionally, the plan envisions the development of a platform to match CO2 suppliers with storage operators, the creation of an investment atlas of potential storage sites, and the implementation of policies to promote the use of carbon as an industrial resource. https://lnkd.in/gYFb6sgn #EUclimatestrategy #carboncapture #carbonstorage #CO2utilization #investmentframework

Another huge step has been made in the field of carbon dioxide utilization! 🎉 The Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA), which is about facilitating the manufacturing of components necessary for the deployment of net zero technologies, was adopted and published in the Official Journal. According to the news of CO2 Value Europe, the NZIA is now officially a law, which can provide a foundation and serve as a reference to support the deployment of clean technologies throughout Europe. NZIA classifies carbon capture and utilization technologies as net zero technologies, which can contribute to the EU's clean-energy transition. According to the development, this can bring important benefits to CCU projects (such as the production of e-fuels and CCU chemicals, or CO2 mineralization): less burdensome administration, faster permitting processes, and the use of the "strategic net zero project" label at the national level. To reach #netzero by 2050, up to 10 billion tonnes of #CO2 must be removed from the atmosphere every year. Carbon dioxide removal currently removes 2 billion metric tonnes per year, but 99.9% comes from nature-based CDR solutions such as afforestation or reforestation. We need to scale durable CDR technologies by a factor of 5,000 by mid-century to support this vital pathway to #decarbonization. Nasim Pour https://lnkd.in/eJf_h6CQ

Extracting billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere annually, by using nature or technology, is the only way to meet goals set under the U.N. Paris climate agreement to curb climate change. Demand for credits reflecting engineered removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is expected to surge as market-friendly incentives lure buyers from sectors as diverse as technology and finance, chemicals and aviation. Nasdaq majority-owned Puro.earth currently accounts for ca. 80% of the certified engineered removal credits. Puro.earth expects its certifications will hit 400,000 this year. #carbonremoval

European Suppliers of Waste-to-Energy Technology (ESWET) praised the recent provisional agreement between the European Council and the European Parliament on the Carbon Removals Certification Framework, highlighting its recognition of biogenic permanent carbon removal. This framework, aligned with IPCC standards, aims to capture 50 million tons of CO2 annually by 2030, crucial for meeting Europe's climate goals. ESWET emphasized the significance of technologies like bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), particularly in sectors like waste-to-energy. The framework provides clarity for investors and emitters, fostering an international market for carbon removals. ESWET emphasized the importance of aligning the framework with existing policies like the Net Zero Industry Act and integrating it with the Emissions Trading System (ETS) for effective industry decarbonization and the journey towards net-zero emissions. https://buff.ly/42QXLUQ.

Researchers from the University of Oxford are calling for government policies to quadruple the #carboncapture industry by 2050! In their report, The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal (Edition 2), they suggest that in addition to reducing emissions, 7 to 9 billion tonnes of CO2 will need to be removed from the atmosphere by 2050 to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Recent findings highlight the need to combine nature-based measures like reforestation (currently less than 0.1% of CO2 removed) with Direct Air Capture (#DAC) to significantly reduce emissions. The captured CO2 can then be permanently stored, for example in cement, making industrial processes more sustainable and carbon negative. At #NeoCarbon we have developed a DAC technology which is scalable and more cost effective through the use of waste heat as an energy source for #CO2capture.
