Important article for academic health systems preparing/implementing a community health and health equity strategic plan. "Appreciating community health priorities and ensuring the 'community voice' is present in all deliberations is a hallmark of the leading health equity programs... Bringing to bear academic health system resources—the clinical network, program portfolio, research program, and population health capabilities—can result in significant improvements to community health outcomes if interventions are designed and implemented in partnership with community organizations. A valuable forum reflecting on 50 years of the Australian community health program established by the Whitlam government. Learnings about the fate of community health in SA and NSW where there has been a lack of state government recognition and support. Lessons in demonstrating impact through routine data collection and evaluation to reverse this trend and strengthen the funding base Do we need evaluation evidence that is specific to community health. There’s a lot of evidence already out there about prevention and primary care. Do we need evidence of multidisciplinary care model via the community health platform to shift the political pressure on state gov to focus on hospital waiting lists?

Wes Streeting sheds light on the challenges hindering the development of a comprehensive plan for Social Care, indicating a potential timeline of up to 10 years to establish a National Care Service. Despite efforts to accelerate discharges and enhance collaboration between Health and Social Care, previous initiatives have not met the mark. The prevailing issues of underfunding, inadequate support, and ineffective regulation within Health, Social Care, and Local Authorities present significant barriers to addressing the needs of an increasingly complex elderly population. The disjointed public sector commissioning of health and social care further complicates the landscape, leading to a system that is failing the people it aims to serve and knowingly so. It is hard to see in public office, who actually cares.
