Does it feel like you're "never not working"? The shift to remote work has blurred the lines between our professional and personal lives, creating a new, casual surplus of work. Just like any bad habit, we've become accustomed to this constant connectivity - it actually akin to an addiction with a dopamine response in our brains. The increased workload, constant availability, and altered communication patterns have been added to our existing schedules, resulting in longer hours and a stronger tether to work than ever before. The harsh reality is this: overwork is at an all-time high, and the evolving landscape of work is only making it worse. Through my focused work around burnout, I’ve witnessed how detrimental overwork can be to both individuals and teams. Consider this three-step process for creating a more sustainable work environment: 1. Assess the Baseline: Identify the extent and root causes of overwork in your organization. This involves gathering data on work hours, employee stress levels, and overall well-being. 2. Plan Incremental Changes: Implement small, manageable adjustments aimed at reducing overwork. This might include setting boundaries around work hours, encouraging breaks, and promoting a culture that values quality over quantity. 3. Sustain Efforts: Continuously monitor the impact of these changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure long-term success. This requires ongoing commitment from leadership and a willingness to adapt strategies as needed. How can we value productivity over mere activity? Our current workplace norms prioritizes "activity" in ways that often hinder knowledge workers' effectiveness. And it is feeding burnout!
