As he done many times before, Richard Rosenow has said what a lot of us are thinking, but we haven't really found a way to articulate it. Converting your company to a "skills-based" institution is very hot right now, especially among the vendors who sell you services that allegedly enable your company to make that conversion. Unfortunately, the linked article in this post suggests that skills-based vendors and consultants have not even done the basic work of providing proof of their claims, let alone a clear definition of what a "skill" is. This is my tl;dr: Moving a company in a "skills-based" direction is no substitute for having a solid learning & development (L&D) team or a solid assessment team. If your company is thinking about implementing a "skills-based" solution, make sure it is both solving an actual business problem & that it doesn't create more problems than it solves.

An incredible weekend read. Takeaway: When it comes to #skills, it may be time to sober up. In recent years, consulting firms and vendors have been turning up the volume on skills and becoming "skills based". The advocacy has hit a fever pitch lately, nearly hitting "panacea" levels, which is a detriment to what good work could be done here. In response, Marc Effron and the Talent Strategy Group have published the most comprehensive breakdown and collection of concerns about the skills conversation today. I can't recommend this paper enough. If you're hearing about skills from your network, vendors, or executives in your company, work through the arguments in this papers with them. It's an incredibly valuable guide. My takeaway, there's value to this skills discussion and skills data especially for #PeopleAnalytics teams, but it's not going to be the revolution weve been sold (oversold). Thank you Marc and the Talent Strategy team for this valuable addition to the conversation!! Read more here ▶️ https://lnkd.in/eMmvppyu

How am I equipping the consultants within the James Andrews Group with the data management tools to stay ahead in the ever-changing world of business? Last week I joined a panel of fellow recruitment leaders, led by APSCO and LinkedIn at LinkedIn's London HQ, to answer this question, and to discuss the complex topics of data literacy and team readiness in a challenging economy. Throughout the session we explored what's working well, where the challenges lie, and how we, as leaders in the space, are equipping our existing workforce with the skills they need to match the changing demands in the talent landscape. It's genuinely valuable to exchange insights and ideas with other industry leaders within forums like this event. These discussions offer a great mix of experiences and perspectives that are crucial in navigating our complex business landscape, and I always come away with plenty of fresh insights to mull over. What strategies have you found most effective in upskilling your team to meet the evolving needs of the recruitment industry? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️ #LinkedIn #APSCo #RecruitmentInnovation #DataLiteracy #WorkforceReadiness #BusinessDevelopment #LeadershipInsights #TalentLandscape #IndustryCollaboration

This is a fascinating read. For those like me who come from a tech and product background, this sounds a *lot* like the consulting pitch on moving to agile. Caveat emptor. This is not to say that either skills-based approaches or agile practices bring no value. However, business leaders, especially of large, mature organizations, should be extremely wary of any strategy which promises to solve all your problems, especially ones predicated on radical organizational change. Consultants generally get paid whether a program succeeds or fails. #skills #agilemethodology #hrconsulting
