There has been much speculation and trepidation in the field about how recent events could impact international student mobility. The IC3 Institute recently conducted a flash poll of 128 counselors from 26 countries across 5 continents to better understand the current sentiment. I am sharing a couple of data points from that poll. 1. We asked counselors how their students' interest in the U.S. as a study destination has been affected by the recent U.S. election: - 44% indicated no noticeable change - 25% were uncertain - 19% indicated a decrease in interest - 12% reported an increase in interest 2. More than 75% of counselors felt somewhat prepared, not very prepared, or uncertain when asked how they feel about their level of preparedness to guide students through national policy changes which could affect globally mobile students. There is a huge need for connection right now. It is my opinion that HEIs emphasizing and accelerating global relationship- and capacity-building efforts with counselors and schools will see significant gains towards enrollment and internationalization goals, in both the short-term and the long-term. Interesting thoughts. Besides the universities, agencies such as the @National Research Fund too ought to be well funded to support innovation...great ideas are left unexplored. To solve Africa's pressing challenges, the government has to be intentional about funding research, innovation, and create an enabling environment for these institutions. https://lnkd.in/dc7Pa845.the-star.co.ke%2Fnews%2Frealtime%2F2024-11-25-chancellor-better-paid-dons-will-restore-uons-glory&utm_campaign=aga&utm_source=agsadl2%2Csh%2Fx%2Fgs%2Fm2%2F4

We were happy to support Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA) regional meetings this week. Mark Corver covered the changing role of data in universities for the South group (thanks for invite Matthew Andrews) including this graph here highlighting that if equality isn't measured and analysed for senior administrators, things tend to get worse. Other dataHE updates this week: Happy Norway day? My thesis, defended last year at Lund University, is finally published with LUP Student Papers 🎉 Permanent link: https://lnkd.in/dHgDTNsF From the abstract: The primary objective of this thesis is to explore the potential for decolonial praxis among public servants in the context of Official Development Assistance. Employing an exploratory and qualitative research design, this study utilizes a least-likely-case study logic to shed light on this underexplored topic.

The theme of International Open Access Week for 2024 will continue with last year’s focus on “Community over Commercialization.” This theme contributed to a growing recognition of the need to prioritize approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community. My first post with Times Higher Education questions why Australia is taking such a sluggish approach to funding from a #nationalsecurity perspective. Currently, our research funding (a measly 0.8% of GDP, below the OECD average and well short of the 3% actually needed by most developed countries) is substantially propped up by international student fees. The more research you do, the more international students you rely on. Unsurprising then that our The Group of Eight universities are now "totally reliant" on international students, something the Albanese government is threatening with hard caps on student enrolments. As I explore in the article, this lack of vision on funding poses a #researchsecurity issue as well, a practice that is woefully underfunded across the sector. Universities are far more willing to engage with, and accept riskier, ventures or investments when domestic funding is insufficient. So, Jason Clare MP - if you're reading this - universities don't just need more money from the government (though that would help). They need incentives to stop looking for money from foreign sources that could compromise our unique research enterprise. https://lnkd.in/e7jZQccz
