Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a UX talk with Indi Young, organized by swissICT. Indi’s work never fails to inspire deeper thinking about how we can better understand users.
It was a great opportunity for me to learn new perspectives on UX research and reflect on my own experiences in the field, particularly in those studies I lead to understand the broader user experience.
Key takeaways:
▶ Users live in complex contexts that influence their cognition and decision-making. It’s important to understand their cognitive environments, emotions, therefore behaviors.
▶ When investigating user experiences, focus on recalling the emotions involved in a situation when using a solution, not just the solution itself.
▶ Ensure a safe space for both interviewers and interviewees. For emotionally charged experiences, involve experts to help the UX research team handle sensitive topics.
▶ A personal tip and note to self: Always take care of your own well-being as a UX researcher. Plan recovery time between activities to avoid cognitive overload and maintain your curiosity and empathy. UX research fatigue is real, even with remote studies.
Thanks again to swissICT and Roland Sailer for organizing, and to Indi for helping me reconnect with these insights. It was also great to meet both new and familiar faces. Let’s keep the conversation going and champion the users!
