Starting Monday with next #uxmethodology 🤓 🗂Methodology: Shadowing 🕵🏼♀️Stage: Research 🗽Goal: observing users as they perform their regular tasks or activities, in order to gain insight into their behaviors, needs, and pain points. The researcher follows the user closely, either in person or remotely, and takes notes on their actions. Recently, Jai Djwa invited me to give a guest lecture for his class of 1st-years at Capilano University. So, what do new students need to know when thinking about UX in XR? Here's a synopsis of my main points: align to existing conventions and think about where things go and how they work, especially in relation to our experiences and perceptions as physical and cultural beings. Yeah, you can do anything in XR, but should you? Probably not.

How "Future Thinking" is Shaping the Way We Work I recently attended the Northern User Experience Conference in Sheffield, thanks to a recommendation from a colleague, and it was an enriching experience. It’s exciting to see conferences expanding beyond London, making events like these more accessible across the UK. #NUX regularly organizes events in cities like Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Sheffield, providing a platform for professionals to connect and learn. A big thank you to the NUX team for organizing such an insightful event! One of the most valuable takeaways for me was diving into the concept of "Future Thinking." This approach emphasizes looking beyond today and preparing for long-term possibilities. It can drive decision-making, innovation, and anticipation of future challenges and opportunities. Key points I learned include: 📌 Better Decision-Making: Using foresight to make decisions that consider long-term impacts. 📌 Driving Innovation: Applying future-oriented thinking to spark creative solutions and new ideas. 📌 Anticipating Future Challenges: Identifying trends and signals to prepare for what’s coming next. The slide in this image is key to this method: 3️⃣ reversals from "the usual" our goal is to understand other people's cognitive context ... and resist cognitive bias 1. frame by people's intention/purpose (not by org's solutions) 2. listen for interior cognition, in memory mode, about this intention/purpose, without bringing up your own topics (instead of asking about explanations & preferences) 3. see emergenty patterns from qual data synthesis using affinity grouping by people's focus of mental attention (not noun tagging, features, timeline)
