Construction and demolition waste is a significant contributor to environmental impact. According to a recent paper from Cornell University, New York State alone generates 18 million tons of construction debris annually. But there’s a clear path forward: Deconstruction and material reuse. Here are some of the key insights from Cornell’s research: ✅ Benefits of deconstruction: Deconstruction allows up to 90% material recovery by systematically dismantling buildings rather than demolishing them, extending the life of valuable resources. ✅ Reducing carbon & creating jobs: Shifting to deconstruction could cut 75% of embodied carbon emissions and create thousands of green jobs in New York State. ✅ Policy shift required: The industry needs regulatory support and strategic investment to support a transition from "take-make-waste" to a circular construction model, enabling a scalable market for reused materials. ✅ Opportunity for industry leadership: With the right framework, New York State can become a national leader in circular economy practices, setting a powerful example for the industry. For AEC professionals and manufacturers of construction products, this means rethinking waste not as a byproduct but as an asset. 🌱 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eY_2_wsP #DecarbonizationNews #construction #sustainability #oneclicklca #newyork

Join our webinar to learn how local governments are taking action to drive down construction industry waste! The construction sector is vital, but the construction industry is the world’s largest consumer of resources and raw materials, and is estimated to generate almost half the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Local governments are looking for ways to drive down this waste — and are finding it in circular economy solutions ranging from deconstruction and adaptive reuse to design for disassembly. Attend our upcoming webinar to hear about policies and practices from Metro Vancouver, British Columbia; Grande-Rivière, Quebec; and Portland, Oregon. · In Quebec, two municipalities take on deconstructing commercial buildings. · In Metro Vancouver, house-moving and a construction and demolition waste reduction toolkit offer support for other local governments. · In Oregon, a deconstruction ordinance is transforming the construction sector. Considered the largest consumer of raw materials in the world, the construction sector accounts for 50% of global resource extraction. Annually, millions of tons of waste are created by the construction, renovation, operations, and demolition of buildings. As the third largest city in the U.S., with millions of square feet currently under construction, Chicago is a key player in the global waste dilemma. Thats why we’re bringing together a diverse group of construction industry professionals to learn how they are addressing this crisis through their work at the Breaking the Waste Habit: Innovative Construction Solutions webinar on August 21. Sharing their expertise will be: Lindsey Landwehr-Fasules, Director of Sustainability, Turner Construction Company; John Mlade, Director, Sustainable and Healthy Environments, Wight & Company; Stuart Vanden Heuvel, Sustainability Program Manager, Rheaply. This group will address how these strategies create new streams of work, wealth, and resources by influencing jobs, reducing carbon impacts and environmental degradation, and supporting multiple social and environmental justice issues.
