MQ-28A Ghost Bat initially impotent for lethal strikes at $40M a piece. More allies need to step up & enable with Class 3 Fixed Wing VTOL UAS. 🇦🇺 & 🇺🇸 are setting the bar high. We could help fill the gaps. Fixed wing gives range & speed & VTOL offers infrastructureless employability anywhere. UCAVs need runways. If runways are denied, UCAVs & fighters can’t take off and do missions. Group 3 UAS require no runways, no launchers, no recovery devices & can operate with C2/Sat Com data link ~ 500+ kms Op radius with ISR | EW | Precision strike payloads in a platooning “wolfpack” of Sensor to Effectors (S2E). One system of 4 UAs could be controlled with a single GCS and with max autonomy, use of ATAK for sensor & C2 handovers, encrypted C2 & GPS-denied. With smaller form factor, hover/stare, perch/sense, they are more covert close. Smaller than UCAV fleets of Loyal Wingman 🇦🇺 & the Kratos’ Valkyrie 🇺🇸, group 3 are ~5X less expensive to a UCAV. These 321-600 lb (lower half of Group 3) could be armed with ALEs for deep sense of threats, then strike with Loitering Munitions, mini PGMs, Small Glide Munitions with more standoff. A 4-pack Group 3 FW VTOL of “motherships” each could carry a blended mission package of sensors and precision strike munitions to meet the coalition’s “Call for Effects”. They are not perfect (a stack of various groups of UAS with crewed systems is best). Grp 3 have limitations over the UCAVs, such as < speed. Dash speed is around 1/3 of UCAV’s, but group 3 excel at loitering covertly with ALEs offboarded which could be VTOL as well to safely land ALEs post deep sense on threats & be safely recovered with no damage to sensors. A fighter would not use a slower group 3 as a “wingman”, but it could still team with them (hunt out in front closer to targets) & send data to fighters, transport, helos and then team on strikes. Group 3 UAs closer to targets could laze them for fighters & AC-130J Ghostrider strikes with laser guided munitions. Nations must recognize that waiting 5-7 years for peacetime procurement to deliver a UAS into service and to get to Full Op Capability (FOC) with sustainment in place to support theatre Ops results in near-to-obsolete systems with reduced relevance to enable coalition effectively. A smaller Group 3 UAS could deliver the majority of the effects of a UCAV with some shortcomings on speed and not being a good fighter’s wingman. BUT, it too could be a FORCE MULTIPLYING system in the mid-air stack for Pan Domain systems with ALEs + mini PGMs + laser guided rockets + Small Glide Munitions with a punch (big WHs) all platooning as a Sensor to Effector (S2E) for coalition. Leasing this system of 4 UAs:2 GCS + sensors and munitions with industry and military teaming could see the capability deployed in 2 years vice 7 years (we are not in peacetime but rather “war footing”). 1st, confirm effectiveness of enabling the Digital K-chain/web & validate CONOPs w/ coalition.
