Stem cells can give rise to many different cell types of the body The process of cellular differentiation occurs in a stepwise manner. When a stem cell divides asymmetrically, one of the resulting daughter cells remains a stem cell, while the other daughter cell is committed to differentiate. In many somatic tissues, this committed cell is called a transit amplifying cell, meaning that it is in transit from a stem cell to a differentiated state. These cells divide frequently, but only for a limited number of divisions, resulting in the amplification of the subsequent differentiated cell population. Extracellular signaling molecules mediate the environmental cues that cause the progeny of these transit amplifying cells to differentiate.
