Did you read the article in Cartoon Brew about how Lionsgate signed a deal with the AI company, Runway (article in comments below). What happened to the ART of storytelling? According to Lionsgate studio vice chairman Michael Burns, the goal is to save money – “millions and millions of dollars” – by having filmmakers and creators use its AI model to replace artists in production tasks such as storyboarding. I’m a huge history buff and after thinking about it, I instantly made a connection to the film industry in the 1980s. Before the 80s, former veteran filmmakers would be promoted to become the head of a studio. That to me is how we got amazing films like Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now. Then in the 1980s, business people (instead of filmmakers) would be hired as the head of the studio, and that’s when it started to change. When money and profits became way more important than the art of film and storytelling. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always been about money, but the former filmmakers understood how to make art that would also bring money. I’ve always felt that was the beginning of the downfall of the art side of filmmaking. There have been great films that have come during this time, but I feel that’s when the industry started having all the problems we now have today: “Just throw the hot new actor in and it’ll bring in money” “Do re-shoots after re-shoots because they don’t have a definitive plan. Oh, and by the way, “we needed that yesterday” “Content. Content. Content” If you have that 1980s feel in 2024, then you understand why we’ve created CELs. A place where artists can get back to the ART of storytelling. Share and repost if you believe in humans behind storytelling, not AI. Sign up for CELs and join the movement to keep storytelling human with the only app dedicated to storytelling in animation, comics, and collectibles. Together we are strong! https://lnkd.in/eseppFDm

In light of the evolving landscape of film consumption, it's clear that the industry is shifting away from a one-size-fits-all model, acknowledging that audiences now have diverse preferences for how they experience storytelling. With the widespread adoption of 4K large screens and advanced sound systems in homes, some films are now being crafted specifically for in-home viewing. These may feature characteristic tailored to this environment. Additionally, with the advent of devices like Apple's ProVision, some films will be made for a more dramatic immersive personal experiences that leverages this viewing technology. Conversely, certain films will still be produced with the theatrical experience in mind, capitalizing on the unique communal atmosphere that only cinemas can provide. This bifurcation signifies a broader transformation within the industry, leading to a richer variety of storytelling methods and greater opportunities for creators and audiences alike. Theaters, in response, would do well to heed Theodore Levitt's advice and reconsider their core business proposition. It's no longer just about movies in theaters, but about showcasing the movie viewing experience to audience whether it is "in-theaters," "in-home," or directly in the viewers eyes through an "in-goggle" immersive experience. Ultimately, it's about curating the movies to audiences. By embracing this paradigm, theaters can remain relevant and vital in an increasingly segmented market. https://

"Recover or Die, Bollywood's Two-Week Ultimatum": The High-Stakes Gamble to Revive Original Storytelling" As the dynamics of filmmaking evolve, Bollywood’s traditional high-budget model faces an increasingly uphill battle. With limited time for box-office recovery, reliance on formulaic plots, and the advent of diversified revenue channels through OTT collaborations, big production houses are at a crossroads. If they don’t adapt, they risk sinking. Here’s why: 1. Rising Budgets with Limited Box Office Windows Big studios continue to invest heavily in star-studded, big-budget films that inflate production costs into the hundreds of crores. Yet, the window for box office recovery is shrinking, often to just two weeks, leaving little margin for error in recouping costs before the movie hits OTT platforms 2. Shifting Audience Expectations and Outdated Formulas Today’s viewers crave authenticity, depth, and emotion over formulaic stories built on “safe” tropes like forced patriotism or action-comedy mixes. This shift has rendered high-action, low-emotion spectacles less appealing, proving that without genuine connection, even lavish productions struggle to engage audiences 3. Limited Revenue Streams Outside of Box Office While T-Series and Yash Raj Films continue to lead, much of their stability comes from diversified revenue streams. T-Series, for example, derives substantial income from its music channels, balancing the volatility of movie box office earnings. Production houses that rely solely on theatrical releases are left exposed in a rapidly diversifying media landscape 4. Collaboration with OTT Platforms: An Untapped Opportunity OTT collaborations present a promising model for minimizing risk. Yash Raj’s foray into digital content, such as The Railway Men and The Romantics, alongside traditional releases like Tiger 3, demonstrates the potential of embracing hybrid strategies. By leveraging OTT as a secondary platform, studios can spread financial risk and secure steady revenue 5. The Future of Bollywood: Adaptation or Decline? The production giants of Bollywood must recognize that adapting to changing audience preferences, embracing diverse revenue models, and collaborating beyond traditional platforms is not optional—it’s essential. Those willing to innovate will thrive; those that don’t will face obsolescence in a new era of cinema The entertainment landscape is evolving fast. For Bollywood, it’s adapt—or sink

"The future of Hollywood is poised to see an unprecedented demand for actors, fueled by an expansion of content platforms and the diversification of storytelling. As streaming services continue to proliferate, the appetite for new and varied content has skyrocketed, necessitating a larger pool of acting talent to bring an ever-increasing number of projects to life. This surge is not just quantitative but qualitative, with calls for more inclusive and representative casting leading to opportunities for actors from diverse backgrounds. This burgeoning demand aligns with the industry's shift towards a more globalized market.
