I’ve been reading through one of Natasha Hendry’s recent research articles, which explores a crucial question: 𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦, 𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘭𝘦-𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺? The research, based on interviews with Black and Global Majority adults, traces their journeys from early experiences in the UK music education system to their present careers in music. The findings are eye-opening, but sadly, not entirely surprising. Many participants shared experiences of significant barriers in both music education and their musical careers, often with lasting psychological effects. This highlights an urgent need to recognise how our music curriculum shapes the experiences and identities of young musicians. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴? From my perspective as a music educator working with very young children, I also need to think: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘐’𝘮 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩? What steps are you taking in your own teaching or curriculum design to make music education inclusive? I’d love to hear about your experiences and practices! #MusicEducation #DiversityAndInclusion #EquityInEducation #GlobalMajority #DEI

Appreciating a diversity of cultures is nice, but… It does not lead to higher expectations and access to rigorous learning for all learners, especially those who are marginalized by society and our schools. Developing cultural proficiency helps you see ways in which you can shift your mindsets and organizations in order to ensure all your music students have equitable access to success in your music program. Cultural proficiency is not about diversity, but it does allow us greater ability to navigate differences. In this chapter 3 of my book, “Music As a Vehicle: A Practical Guide to Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching in Today’s Music Classrooms”, you will: 🎵Understand what cultural proficiency is 🎶Explore the tools for cultural proficiency 🎵Identify various behaviors and music education practices in relation to the continuum of cultural proficiency Order your copy today at www.MusicAsAVehicle.com! #MusicAsAVehicle

▶️ https://lnkd.in/gbhtNPHA Exciting research from Dr. Sylvain Moreno and the Rotman Research Institute reveals the powerful impact of music training on young minds. According to their study, just 20 days of music training can significantly enhance cognitive abilities in children! 🧠 The findings are striking: nearly all children who participated showed remarkable improvements in cognitive functions, illustrating the rapid benefits that studying music can bring. This isn't just about learning an instrument—it’s about nurturing a sharper, more engaged brain. At MLA, we are excited to see scientific research backing what we witness every day: students excelling not only in music but in their overall mental growth and academic performance. Our piano classes are designed to tap into this potential, helping each child develop their skills and confidence. 🎶 Whether your child is just beginning their musical journey or looking to further enhance their abilities, our tailored piano programs can help stimulate these cognitive benefits, ensuring they not only play music but also thrive in all areas of life. Curious about how piano lessons can benefit your child beyond the music room? This #PrideMonth, we celebrate the vibrant diversity of our music community. Let's continue to foster acceptance and love for all 🌈 Here are 4 Ways to Foster an Inclusive Classroom ➡ Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eWDjbVn5 🎵 Diverse Repertoire: Including music from various cultures, genres, and historical periods. This not only broadens students’ musical exposure but also allows them to see their own cultures represented. 🌎 Cultural Context: Teaching the historical and cultural background of music pieces. This helps students understand the broader context of the music they are learning. 🎤 Student Voice: Encouraging students to share their musical interests and experiences. This can lead to more engaged learning and a sense of ownership in their musical education. 💭 Critical Discussions: Facilitating conversations about how social issues intersect with music, such as exploring how different artists have used music as a form of social commentary. By integrating these elements in curriculum development, music educators can create a curriculum that not only educates but also empowers students by honoring their diverse identities. #TMEA #InclusiveEducation #DiversityInMusic
