Find out how resilience research for inclusive insurance is like experiencing a surprise menu at dinner with friends and partners. Surprises will likely include many courses, innovating on old recipes, purpose and profits, and a shared experience. I also provide some hot takes on resilience research focused on micro- and small-enterprise (MSE) owners in Brazil and Indonesia that was recently shared by our Swiss Re partners Edoardo Totolo and Anindita Chakraborty from Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI). The research contains many surprises that will help to guide the development of commercial opportunities that build resilience for this target underserved market. Many thanks to my Swiss Re colleagues Maria, Xin Qing Zou, Alessandra Brantegani, Joshua Jeremy, FSA, and Elsa Lengeler for their support in bringing this project to life and to Gilles Renouil for his contribution to the discussion on embedded insurance. #financialinclusion, #insurance, #resilience
Shelly Habecker, PhD, the blog is spot on and what a nice way to use the surprise menu metaphor! Looking forward to working with you, the Swiss Re team and partners on designing a surprise menu with offers many courses, innovates on recipes and balances profit with purpose. Thank you again for sharing hot-takes from the research.
Thanks you for these great thoughts. I am always amazed by your energy and passion for resilience and research. Curiosity drives innovation. Well done. Looking forward to the pilot in Brazil and the next steps in Indonesia. And talking about surprise menu - one of my highlights was the fascinating story of fruit-marrying from Shailee (would be worth a blog on this too. Long live the anthropologists!)
Thank you Shelly for these amazing reflections and for spotlighting our work at CFI! It’s been an incredible journey exploring the resilience of MSE owners and uncovering actionable insights. Excited to translate these findings into meaningful, inclusive insurance pilots through our collaboration. Here's to many more 'surprise menu' moments ahead!
Love this - yay Shelly!

1wThank you so much for this wonderful blog, Shelly. I take every pleasure in continuing working with you Anindita Chakraborty, Edoardo Totolo and Joshua Jeremy, FSA as well as partners in Indonesia. Both a good meal and end product would require us to contextualize and incorporate local “ingredients”. Look forward to what we can create together for MSE customers in Indonesia.
