During the winter surge, when hospital staff are often stretched to their limits, palliative care agencies provide essential support that can help ease the demands on healthcare providers. By offering specialized care focused on managing pain, symptoms, and quality of life, palliative care teams can help reduce hospital admissions and the length of stay for patients with chronic or complex illnesses. This allows hospital staff to focus on acute cases, knowing their patients are receiving high-quality, compassionate care tailored to their unique needs. Palliative care agencies also collaborate closely with hospital teams to coordinate care plans, ensuring continuity and reducing the burden on hospital staff to manage complex cases alone. They provide emotional and psychosocial support to both patients and families, which can alleviate stress and free up hospital resources. Through these services, palliative care agencies play a vital role in reducing strain on healthcare providers, helping to improve patient outcomes while supporting hospital teams through the busiest months of the year. Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses by providing comfort and relief from symptoms. Unlike end-of-life care, it’s available at any stage of illness and can be provided alongside curative treatments. - Comfort-first approach: Palliative care addresses pain, stress and other symptoms to enhance patients' quality of life. - Holistic care: It supports physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, offering a whole-person approach to care. - Collaborative care team: A team of doctors, nurses and social workers work together to tailor a care plan to each individual. - Available early: Palliative care can be helpful at any stage of illness, from diagnosis through ongoing management. By offering palliative care, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall experience for families. At Compassus, we are committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care at every step of the journey. “It is a place we are not stuck in, but a place we can rest our minds.” Guest, Tupu Ake, Papatoetoe Today we released an insights paper on acute options that can provide an alternative to acute inpatient care. We highlight peer-led, community-based, and Kaupapa Māori services as these types of services show positive outcomes and are well received by people who need acute care. The alternative options share some key features that resonate with those with lived experience. Notably, tāngata whaiora felt supported and accepted by peer-led services and these services managed decisions about risk and safety in collaboration with them. Services also provided a gateway to other services when required and had strong relationships with local clinical services and crisis teams. Greater investment in a wider range of community-based acute options can support people through the acute phase. This will help relieve some of the pressure that acute inpatient services are under.
