From 1950 to 1990, the focus of the Toyota Production System (TPS) was primarily on the production department. During this period, key objectives were Jidoka, Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing, and cost reduction. These principles were central to TPS. However, over time, TPS has evolved to encompass all divisions within the company and extends its reach to suppliers and external partners. This expansion is a crucial aspect of modern TPS. It has led to the development of a new framework that includes concepts like Lean New Product Development, Advanced Kaizen, and Jikotei Kanketsu (Built Quality into the Process). Notably, in this evolution, there's a significant emphasis on the human element within TPS. This involves fostering mutual trust and respect among employees, enhancing motivation, and promoting the philosophy of continuous improvement or "kaizen." In summary, TPS has transitioned from a production-centric approach to a more holistic one, involving all company divisions, as well as suppliers and partners. It integrates new concepts while focusing on the development and motivation of the people involved, all while maintaining its commitment to quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
