In the NHS and in many health systems around the world, demand for health services has begun to outstrip health systems’ capacity to provide care. And yet we still see large numbers of acute beds being occupied by patients who are medically fit and could be discharged to their homes or residential and nursing care homes. So what’s stopping this happening? This is the question that myself and my global KPMG colleagues looked at in some detail a few months ago – if it was an easy thing to fix, it would have been fixed already! We set out to think differently about how to help health systems deliver better value for the communities and the patients they serve. We used the KPMG Connected Enterprise for Healthcare approach to redesign care pathways and to leverage digital solutions and new ways of working, such as improving efficiency of critical transitions in care pathways.
