Governance Matters for Conservation! 🐘 A new study co-authored by USFWS employees and published in Conservation Biology, sheds light on an often overlooked factor in conservation success: governance. After analyzing projects across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, researchers found that, despite growing recognition of governance’s importance, only 3.2% of over 1,000 articles screened provided direct evidence linking governance to conservation outcomes! This highlights a significant gap in our understanding of its true impact. From elephants in sub-Saharan Africa to wetlands in the U.S., strong governance ensures every conservation dollar is well spent. The Gondwana Rainforests were listed as a Queensland protected area in 1994 to conserve biodiversity and cultural values, and support functioning ecosystems that provide essential life services like clean air and water. Scientific research in these protected areas is closely regulated to preserve biodiversity. Under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, you may require a permit if you are: ✅ a PhD student catching and releasing fauna for a specific research project ✅ a scientific institution collecting plant parts for a specific study ✅ a university studying invertebrates ✅ a museum studying the taxonomy of reptile species ✅ a researcher collecting water, rock or soil samples for a study ✅ and/or intending to take, use, keep or interfere with cultural or natural resources for scientific or educational purpose Prior to lodging a permit, applicants are first required to consult with the correct Rainforest Aboriginal peoples. #QueenslandScience #QueenslandEnvironment #WorldRainforestDay

Together with Madeline Showers, I am pleased to share our article, "Integrative Highway Rights-of-Way Management To Reduce Stormwater Run-off and Enhance Habitat," published recently in Restoration Ecology. We address the ecological impacts of highways and roadside management and propose a conceptual model to support managers in the development of sustainable roadside restoration plans. Madeline graduated from the Mizzou College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources - CAFNR in May 2024. It was a pleasure having her in class and serving as her undergraduate research mentor! The European Commission has produced a #biodiversity toolkit for educators of students aged 13-16.The toolkit aims to help students understand the importance of Europe’s nature by introducing them to topics such as biodiversity and basic environmental science concepts. Within the toolkit are resources to find and recognise different plant and animal species as well as local habitats. Students will be able to engage with nature in a meaningful way and communicate what Europe’s shared natural heritage means to them personally. https://lnkd.in/e4spjWRR

In December 2024 Yagasu has just published the book "Types of Birds in the Mangrove Ecosystem" The book describes the unique characteristics of mangrove forests which are able to adapt salty environments, and various bird species from their physical characteristics to their conservation status. The book will be a useful as a guide for researchers, students and environmentalists as well as those who interested in learning more about biodiversity of the mangrove ecosystem.
