World Suicide Prevention Day at Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust: A Commitment to Saving Lives. As we approach World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th, it’s a time to reflect on the importance of mental health and how we can all play a role in preventing suicide. The theme for 2024, "Creating Hope Through Action," is a reminder that suicide is preventable, and by working together, we can save lives. World Suicide Prevention Day, organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to promote worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. The theme for 2024, “Creating Hope Through Action,” underscores the message that suicides are preventable, and through collaborative efforts, lives can be saved. In the UK, nearly 6,000 people die by suicide each year, according to the Office for National Statistics. The impact is profound, leaving behind grieving families, friends, and communities. The stigma surrounding mental health issues and suicide often prevents individuals from seeking the help they need, making awareness and support efforts crucial. At Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH), we are committed to supporting our communities in preventing suicide and reducing the stigma around mental health. By fostering a culture of care, both within our organisation and in the communities we serve, we can encourage conversations and offer vital support to those in need. It would be tone deaf to not acknowledge the importance of this day and the impact that talking about it and having an open conversation can help to reduce the stigma faced by people left to suffer alone. Therefore, it is important to remember that suicide is not distinguished by looks, characteristics, age, gender, race or personality. Anyone can feel suicidal at any point in their life this can be due to a range of personal factors. We believe that no one should have to face mental health challenges alone. Whether you are struggling personally or know someone who is, it's important to reach out. Support is available, and small actions can make a big difference. Towards Zero Suicide CIC was set up to be 100% dedicated to the #TransformationalChange challenge of getting the (UK) #suicide numbers on a downward trend #TowardsZeroSuicide... ...by working with collaborative partners who share the same vision and values - where we're trying to get to, what we want to achieve, the best way to fulfil the vision, the 'right' way to deliver it - and, very importantly, collaborative partners who share the same high level of ambition. We want to create and sustain a #ZeroSuicideSociety "that is willing and able to do all it can to prevent all preventable suicides". "To prevent all preventable suicides" has to be the ambition! How can we settle for anything less?! And it has to be a whole-of-society approach to be able to achieve our shared, ambitious goal. Although suicide discriminates in that some groups in society, and some areas of the country, have significantly higher suicide rates than others... 1) Anyone can be affected by suicide and 2) Everyone can help prevent suicides - you, your family & friends, your community, your colleagues; your councillors, your MP; already active #SuicidePrevention advocates & campaigners; and people who are not currently active in trying to prevent suicides but could be. You can become active yourself and you can help activate others. You can educate yourself and help educate others. Only 6% of the UK population has ever done any suicide prevention #training! If you haven't, you can, inc the free, 20 mins, online Zero Suicide Alliance #SuicideAwareness course And you can promote it to others. As Towards Zero Suicide CIC Founder Paul Vittles highlights in this review of the past 16 months - from July 2023, when a petition to parliament was launched for the measures needed to get the suicide numbers down, to Nov 2024 - there are many people & organisations committed to this cause and active, every day, in trying to get the suicide numbers down... ...as Paul calls them, those who work 'in the #SuicideReduction business (not just suicide prevention)'... and, sadly, there are also people, organisations & institutions, inc Govt with a large G & govt with a small g - even some of those people & organisations claiming to be trying to help - actually creating barriers to change. Even though it's largely unintended consequences of their actions, or the inevitable consequences of their inaction, the adverse impact is the same - it prevents us from getting the suicide numbers on a downward trend, towards zero suicide. Please read Paul's review, give us your thoughts, give us your ideas on how you think we can make breakthroughs in getting the suicide numbers down... ...and please get in touch (via Paul) if you share the same values, vision & ambition, and you think you can help create a Zero Suicide Society and get these numbers down. https://lnkd.in/eVnWCmBY

World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 Changing the narrative on suicide Suicide is a major public health challenge, with more than 700 000 deaths each year globally. Each suicide has far-reaching social, emotional, and economic consequences, and deeply affects individuals and communities worldwide. The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation". This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. The call to action encourages everyone to start the conversation on suicide and suicide prevention. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of support. This theme also emphasizes the need to prioritize suicide prevention and mental health in policy making, calling for government action. Changing the narrative requires advocating for policies that prioritize mental health, increase access to care, and provide support for those in need. World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). The 10th September each year aims to focus attention on the issue, reduces stigma and raises awareness among organizations, governments, and the public, giving a singular message that suicides are preventable. Changing the Narrative on Suicide Anyone in despair deserves not to be stigmatised and ashamed of feeling like this or having these thoughts, it’s a cry for help. Be the one to offer a friendly, non judgemental space to be open and honest as just having someone to talk to can make such a difference in that moment. A hug can also be so powerful. “It’s Okay, Not to Be Okay” There are organisations across the UK that can help if you find yourself or someone you know in a mental health crisis. Today is world suicide prevention day. My socials are flooded with it. "Suicide prevention". To prevent suicide seems unrealistic. To prevent suicide would be to address external and environmental factors. Cost of living, housing crisis, homelessness, alcahol & drug use, trauma, life adversity, mental distress, relationship breakdowns, isolation, lonliness, disability, the referendum. It goes on.... In society, the dominant narrive to preventing suicide is: >To call for help (I.e. helplines, hospital, community mental health, police). > Is to consider hospital or is to take someone your supporting to hospital > Treatment, therapy, medication Disclaimer * These things are okay! These things are sometimes more then okay; they are great even! I take medication daily that helps me 👋 I'm not against the dominant approaches. (But) these things have also known to cause harm. The system is still flawed. We do not have a human rights law in WA yet. We still have the Mental Health Act in place. We still have peoples rights stripped from them (as have I in the past). People are often recovering from what's happened to them in the system (out of home care, justice, hospital). Let's start over: Today is suicide prevention day. Today I will not talk about how to *prevent suicide. Today I will talk about suicide, and allow conversations about suicide around me (as I will everyday). Instead of trying to prevent people taking their lives. Instead of thinking we can dictate someone's decision, in choosing to live or die (choice, autonomy). Instead of trying to work out how to *stop suicide. Can we instead try: >alt2suicide approaches (if dominant approaches don't work). > peer support > considering how community can do better at support people, consider your own community and what you can do. > Lean into connect deeper with people. Have conversations about distress and suicide, wholeheartedly This isn't as #alternative as it seems. Talk about suicide. Talk about distress. Talk about the hard, messy, uncomfortable things. Without..... >Agendas to move it along. >The "fix it" hat on. Lets challange our own comfort levels - sitting with someone talking about suicide, isn't easy! And neither is it for the person experiencing these thoughts and feelings. And nor is it for the grief and loss we face when we loose our loved ones, friends, and community members. This is my hope for suicide prevention day (and let's be real, every other day).

The 10th of September is World Suicide Prevention Day and, according to the World Health Organization, the theme for this year is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’ with a strong call to action ‘Starting the Conversation’. In 2023, 5656 deaths by suicide were registered in the United Kingdom alone. However, despite this staggering statistic, it is the stigma of suicide that disallows the much needed conversation – especially in the workplace. In a post-pandemic era of employee monitoring, decreased DEI debate and a 464% spike in demand for ‘quiet holidays’, it is imperative to break the stigma in the workplace and provide our colleagues with psychological safety and kindness – crucially reminding our co-workers that they are not alone, and that they are safe to seek help. Yesterday, City Group Security had the privilege of sponsoring & attending the "Changing the Narrative" conference hosted by Cushman & Wakefield and organised by the Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide. The conference was opened by Ian Dyson QPM DL, who eloquently explained the reasons behind the Consortium's creation. He emphasised the need for a collective effort to address the alarming rates of suicide, which claim more lives than road collisions, crime, and terrorism. Ashley Fernandes JP, FCMI, F.ISRM, FRSA, MSyI,and AMBCI delivered a powerful presentation on breaking the stigma surrounding suicide. He highlighted the importance of creating a culture where individuals feel comfortable discussing their struggles without fear of judgment or repercussions. Doing so can dismantle the barriers that prevent open dialogue and ultimately save lives. Claire Giraud, Senior Public Health Practitioner at City & Hackney Public Health Team, presented sobering statistics on the prevalence of suicide in the City of London. She revealed that suicide is the leading cause of death in the area, with most incidents occurring in public spaces and a staggering 65% of completed suicides taking place on bridges. These numbers showcase the urgent need for collective action. Jay Mackenzie, Associate Professor in Psychology, shared research findings on the importance of disclosure, communication, training, and collaboration in suicide prevention. Vicki Vidler bravely shared her personal story of losing her brother to suicide, highlighting the need to address grief and stigma and the importance of showing that it's okay not to be OK. Ian Bond, ex-police, emphasised the need for collaboration and shared the Courage video. This free tool provides robust oversight of some challenges first-line responders face. Alice Hendy MBE, the founder of the charity R;pple, shared her personal story of losing her brother Josh to suicide and introduced a digital intervention tool that intercepts harmful or suicide-related online searches, guiding individuals through breathing exercises and signposting them to helplines and mental health resources. Mike McCarthy, founder of the Baton of Hope UK, moved the room with his emotional lived experience of losing his son Ross to suicide. The Baton of Hope has created a movement across the UK, and each person in the room had the opportunity to touch the baton as it was passed around, symbolising hope and solidarity. Heather Barker from the Samaritans discussed contributing factors and early intervention through listening, while Shital V from Free to Be You engaged the room with a thought-provoking presentation on suicide, hidden harms, and domestic abuse. The "Changing the Narrative" conference was a powerful reminder that suicide prevention is a collective responsibility. The conference featured diverse speakers, each bringing unique insights and perspectives to the discussion.

When we connect a plug to a socket we create life in the form of energy. When we (truly) connect with others, we also create energy & an opportunity for those who feel isolated and disconnected to thrive. At last Thursday's BatonOfHopeUK, Dr. Nihara Krause MBE from stem4, talked about the importance of connection in supporting those who feel suicidal: "True connection is not about liking someone's social media post, it's about taking time to get to know & learn about that individual at a deeper level" People don't care how much you know, they need to know how much you care. Professor Rory O'Connor, recognised by many as the UK's leading authority on preventing suicides, talked about the "4 C's" of suicide prevention: 👉Compassion: from others & towards oneself. 👉Complexity: the importance of education to understand how complex causes of suicide are. 👉Care: we need to rethink the model of care in this country, because what we're doing now isn't reducing the numbers of suicides and importantly... 👉Connection: anything which helps people have more meaningful connections is crucial - including any small act of support, kindness etc. Through our own research at The Jordan Legacy CIC, we have heard from those who have survived a suicide attempt and are now thriving in life. When asked what important factors helped them, an overwhelming response was 'Being connected with people who are important to me.' Why did the UK not experience that 'inevitable' increase in suicides during the COVID-19 pandemic? One theory, with supporting evidence, is that we all came together as a community - in our communities & neighbourhoods- we constantly checked in with each other, especially those who were more vulnerable. We came out onto the streets every Thursday evening to applaud those working on the front-lines to keep us safe & we felt a deep sense of community and connection with those around us. How do we prevent your partner, son, daughter, mum, dad, close relative, friend, colleague being the next 'statistic' on an upward trending graph of suicides in the UK (currently at 6000+ 'reported' suicides!)? It's simple to say but a challenge of significant proportions (potentially one of the biggest transformational change initiatives this country has faced), we must join up all the dots & work collaboratively if we are to save lives. On June 12th, Paul Vittles and Towards Zero Suicide CIC, supported by The Jordan Legacy, launches the #ZeroSuicideSociety #JoinTheDots Tour, with a conference at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe - a number of organisations are booking tables to attend this event, which launches a 12 day tour. 👉Check out the conference & tour details here: https://lnkd.in/ezfS4zfb I've heard suicide described as being like a bomb going off in your front room. You may survive the initial blast but the shrapnel remains embedded in you & others for a life time. It's time for suicide to become everyone's business

29 days to go, until one of the most inspiring and forward thinking suicide prevention conferences of 2024. Would your organisation, workplace or perhaps people in your network like to collaborate and have your own table at the #ZeroSuicideSociety #JoinTheDots launch conference on June 12th, at the iconic Baths Hall in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire at a huge saving compared with purchasing individual tickets? 👉See the attached flyer for details and then email hello@theJordanlegacy.com. This event, brought to you by Towards Zero Suicide CIC in collaborative partnership by The Jordan Legacy CIC, is designed to showcase aspects of the 'ground-breaking' report we published in July 2023; "Moving Towards a Zero Suicide Society", which maps out how we get the numbers of suicides on a downward trend, towards Zero and the practical actions required to get there. In April this year, the Office for National Statistics published its latest suicide statistics for the period from 2022-23, which showed an average increase in suicides in England of 6%. That includes an 8% increase in female suicides, 5% in males, in fact an average increase in people taking their own lives across virtually every gender age group! On June 12th, if you work in healthcare, or you lead a team in your workplace, maybe you run a community organisation or you're responsible for educating young people, perhaps your a worried parent or you're involved in suicide prevention in some way, this event will provide you with an understanding of just how big a problem we face as a society and why we can no longer continue to lose 6000+ men, women and children to one of the most preventable deaths in the UK. We know that anyone can be impacted by suicide and yet everyone can play a part in reducing the numbers. When I lost my son, Jordan, to suicide in December 2019, I vowed that I would do whatever I could to prevent the same happening to any other family. But we need an army of educated and activated people, who are willing and able to collaborate - together, we know we can move closer to a 'Zero Suicide Society', one that is willing and able to do all it can to prevent all preventable suicides. Here's what I would recommend if you care enough and want to make a difference: ✅Check out the amazing conference line up on the website here: https://lnkd.in/ew6YZavx ✅Decide if attending is important to you and whether anyone else would like to attend the event with you? ✅Book your ticket(s) at just £120 each, via the links provided on the website or contact hello@thejordanlegacy.com if you would like to reserve a table of between 5-9 people and potentially save up to 55% on individual ticket prices. ✅Please let others know in your network that this event is happening. During the 40 seconds that it's taken you to read this post, someone somewhere in the world has just taken their own life. Together, we can change this. #suicideprevention

My thoughts on suicide intervention and mental health : (1) Build accessible authenctic support communities. So the at-risk do not feel they are alone. (2) Find real people with real stories of their own pain journeys and how they healed through the journeys. To give hope that there are options beyond suicide. #benjaminseet #suicideintervention #mentalhealth #valuelife
It’s not easy to talk about suicide. I personally knew two people who took their own lives - one a relative, another a colleague I had worked closely with for a number of years. It’s hard to imagine how much pain someone is going thru to have to make a decision to end their own life. Through the work at IMH, volunteer and community organisations, the number has dropped from over 470 in 2022 to 322 last year. This is a substantial drop, but it still means that we lose someone to suicide almost every day in Singapore. Suicides are only the tip of the iceberg. There is a need to not only address suicide, but some of the underlying conditions like anxiety and depression. As I talked to more people, I hear about the trauma of losing someone close - a son, mother, classmate. I thank ST for doing this story - raising awareness about suicide is an important step. There is much more we have to do… https://lnkd.in/g9zeW86v

"Today, being the 10th of September 2024, we observe #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of suicide on individuals, families and communities. Suicide is the leading cause of death worldwide, claiming over 800,000 lives annually. In our state, we have lost precious lives to suicide. Each suicide has far-reaching social, emotional and economic consequences and deeply affects individuals and communities. The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for the years 2024 to 2026 is, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation”. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding and support. The call to action encourages everyone to start the conversation on suicide and suicide prevention... ...This theme also emphasizes the need to prioritize suicide prevention and mental health in policymaking, calling for government action. It requires advocating for policies that prioritize mental health, increase access to care and provide support for those in need. The Rivers State government under the leadership of H.E., Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Grand Service Star of Rivers State, is deeply committed to addressing this critical public health issue. This commitment and dedication are the underlying principles behind the administration’s investments in addressing mental health issues. From the ongoing project to upgrade the state’s Neuropsychiatric Hospital, the construction of the State Drug Rehabilitation Centre and the recent introduction of mental healthcare services at the primary level of healthcare delivery, establishing mental health support hotlines and training health professionals in suicide prevention and collaborating with community organizations to promote mental health awareness. As a people, we must collectively work together to prevent suicide by reducing the stigma around mental health, increasing access to mental health services, promoting emotional well-being in our families, communities and workplaces, supporting vulnerable populations and encouraging open conversations about mental health. But we can and must do more. I, therefore, urge everyone to listen without judgement, offer support and resources, encourage health-seeking behaviour and together we can create a society that not only values mental health but promotes hope and prevents suicide. Let us unite to make a difference. Let us work together towards a future where every individual can live a fulfilling life, free from the shadows of suicide." Dr Adaeze Oreh. The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Rivers State. #SuicidePreventionDay #ChangeTheNarrative #StartTheConversation #Health4AllRivers #RiversState
