The university has made significant progress in the past few years. There has been a 66% increase in the number of Master's degrees awarded, an 80% increase in doctoral degrees awarded, and an 80% increase in staff holding NRF ratings. Moreover, research outputs have increased by 82%, including articles published in scientific journals and comparing the years 2011 and 2014. The proportion of academic staff holding doctorates has risen to 32%, which is relatively high in the university technology sector, and approximately 50% of the research outputs were published in international scientific journals. #CUT20YearsStrong

Focus on PhD Quality, Not Publications Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, the chair of UGC, emphasizes that high-quality PhD work should naturally lead to strong publications, not the other way around. Mandating publications before thesis submission creates unnecessary pressure and pushes students towards predatory journals. Let’s focus on nurturing inquisitive scholars and quality research, with publications as a natural outcome.

Most of the students ask me, Mam, how to identify the research gap!!! Identifying a research gap is like finding a missing puzzle piece in a vast picture of knowledge. It is crucial for thesis or dissertations because it shows where new insights are needed, guiding researchers to contribute original findings rather than repeating what's already known. A research gap highlights the unexplored or under-explored areas within a field, offering a clear direction for investigation. This focus ensures the research is relevant, valuable, and adds depth to the existing body of knowledge. By pinpointing where the current literature falls short, researchers can tailor their studies to address these deficiencies, pushing the boundaries of understanding further. Essentially, recognizing and addressing a research gap ensures that academic work not only broadens our comprehension of a subject but also solves real-world problems, leading to advancements and innovations that can shape the future.

A Ranking of the Non-Aligned (with the Web of Science). Based on data from the OpenAlex platform of open access research publications, Leiden University has made available an alternative ranking to those based on the Web of Science. It's interesting to notice how the policies in favor of open access affect the traditional rankings. Worldwide, Harvard is in first place, but there are 12 Chinese universities in the top 25, São Paulo is 15th and Oxford 18th.
