Has regulation gone far enough to prevent gender based harassment @ work? Centre for Future Work Senior Researcher Lisa Heap says no. This is because current regulatory approaches place too much focus on behaviour and culture at work and not enough on the systemic and structural components that create the conditions of work in which violence flourishes. Lisa presented her research to the Australian Education Union Federal Women’s Conference as part of a panel on organising and using industrial laws to win transformative change at work with Sarah Petratos, caterina C. and Nareen Young.

A zero-tolerance policy is more than just a statement; it’s a crucial step on a path toward a safer, more equitable academic world. 🧡 Gender-based violence takes many forms – from subtle exclusionary practices to overt harassment and abuse. Why must institutions take a firm, zero-tolerance approach? 🧡 It sends a clear message that GBV is totally unacceptable within the institution or sector. 🧡 It acts as a strong deterrent against GBV, ensuring that all instances of unacceptable behaviour are investigated and sanctioned. 🧡 It emphasises institutional healing and rehabilitation, aligning with the institutional change approach. Learn more about Zero-Tolerance approach here: https://lnkd.in/e_n4cqdS 🌍 #16DaysOfActivism is a worldwide initiative calling for the elimination of gender-based violence. During these 16 days, let’s urge our institutions to take definitive action against GBV in #highereducation and #research. Real change begins with commitment. Join us in advocating for zero tolerance and accountability against GBV in academia. Together, we can build a culture that supports everyone and fosters genuine equality.

Energised after a fantastic week in Sydney catching up with colleagues and attending the Our Watch conference, tackling the important issue of gender-based violence within the University sector. Universities have an important role to play in changing the story. As education institutions, employers and as leaders in research. We need to do more. So many gold nuggets from the day, here are just a few; 🟠 Draw on the courage of the victims to have the hard conversations we need to be having. 🟠 Getting backlash means we are driving change in the right direction. Lean in, seek to understand and stay the course. 🟠 Survivor advocates and activists need to be at the centre of our design, we need to elevate these voices. 🟠 The new National Code is coming, with a strong focus of prevention, accountability and transparency. 🟠 Our panel of male allies told us they are breaking down gendered stereotypes and misconceptions through story telling and seeking to understand the ‘why’. I’m looking forward to the road ahead as we take a whole of University approach to the prevention of gender-based violence at Notre Dame. Everyone has a role to play. #ourwatch #changethestory #genderequality #genderbasedviolence

what is equality in real manner. If we see in laws there is a huge difference in equality and if we see in the society mentality there is again a big gap in equality.

For this week’s #WIJAWednesday, we reflect on the results of #CSW68 and highlight key commitments Member States made to women’s #leadership and #equality. The adopted document calls on States to enable the “full, equal, and meaningful participation and leadership of #women” in all areas of public life, ensuring their involvement in decision-making processes. It also mandates the elimination of occupational segregation by addressing #gender-specific barriers, including negative social norms and #discriminatory practices. The Asia Justice Coalition’s 'Women Leadership in International Justice and Accountability' #WIJA project ties in with these objectives. It aims to identify issues impeding #women’s leadership in international law and deliver domestic interventions in three target jurisdictions in #Asia. The Asian Australian Lawyers Association supports the findings of the recent anti-racism report comissioned by the Australian Human Rights Commission and conducted by the FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia). As AALA National President Matt Floro emphasises, “Combatting racism must be a shared responsibility—one that ensures every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to fulfil their dreams in the country we call home.” This report highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to address racism in workplaces, schools, and beyond. Let’s work together to create a more inclusive future for all. #AALAmediarelease #Inclusion #Diversity
